Multicenter Randomized Clinical Trial of a Mailed Outreach Strategy for Hepatocellular Carcinoma Surveillance
The effectiveness of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) surveillance is mitigated by underuse in clinical practice, highlighting a need for interventions. We evaluated the effectiveness of mailed HCC surveillance outreach to promote HCC surveillance in patients with cirrhosis. (Source: Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology)

Sugars and Gastrointestinal Health
Sugar overconsumption is linked to a rise in the incidence of noncommunicable diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and cancer. This increased incidence is becoming a real public health problem that is more severe than infectious diseases, contributing to 35 million deaths annually. Excessive intake of free sugars can cause many of the same health problems as excessive alcohol consumption. Many recent international recommendations have expressed concerns about sugar consumption in Westernized societies, as current consumption levels represent quantities with no precedent during hominin evolution. We thank Dr Wauters and colleagues for their interest in our work. Complying with the journal word count, some details published elsewhere were not included in this paper. Every patient in our cohort had dyspepsia. Seven of 8 patients who did not satisfy Rome III criteria and 39 of 40 patients had moderately severe (or worse) symptoms on at least 1 subscale of the 2-week PAGI-SYM daily symptom diary, which provides a more refined characterization of symptoms than a single questionnaire.1 Similar to this study, many patients with dyspepsia in clinical practice do not satisfy the Rome criteria. Meet EBE: The Development of an Evidence-Based Endoscopy Simulator
In the digital era of evidence-based medicine, there is a paucity of video endoscopy teaching platforms that use evidence-based medicine principles, or allow for cognitive simulation of endoscopic management strategies. We created a guideline-based teaching platform for fellows that incorporates these features, and tested it. (Source: Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology)

Subclinical Persistent Inflammation as risk factor for Crohn's Disease progression: findings from a prospective real-world study of 2 years
Subclinical intestinal inflammation is common in Crohn ’s disease (CD). We aimed to explore its impact in the disease progression of infliximab-treated patients and the usefulness of fecal calprotectin (FC) and C-reactive protein (CRP) as surrogate minimally invasive biomarkers. Impact of Inflammatory Bowel Disease Therapies on Durability of Humoral Response to SARS-CoV-2 Vaccination
Immunization against the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 reduces transmission1,2 and severe outcomes. However, little is known regarding the impact of immune-mediated diseases and immunosuppressive medications on the efficacy of vaccination. Vaccination immunity is transient, with breakthrough cases increasing at longer time intervals since the last dose.3,4 Although there are data on SARS-CoV-2 vaccine on early seroconversion in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD),5 no data in the same cohort exist describing the durability of these antibodies over time. We sought to investigate the impact of IBD and its therapies ...

We appreciate the comments by Kao and colleagues on our article entitled “Chronic constipation as a risk factor for colorectal cancer: results from a nationwide, case-control study.”1 Kao and colleagues noted that sibling control subjects may be at future risk of colorectal cancer (CRC) and that follow-up time on siblings was not reported. However, the median “foll ow-up time” (time between constipation and CRC) for index individuals and their sibling control subjects was similar (5.4 [3.6–7.4] years for CRC vs 5.6 [3.9–7.6] years for sibling control subjects), as was median time between constipation and CRC fo...
