One Dead, Two Wounded in Shooting Inside California Costco
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Police Department is gathering evidence and video footage in an administrative investigation into an off-duty officer who shot and killed a man authorities say attacked him inside a Southern California Costco Wholesale warehouse store.
Authorities remained tight-lipped Sunday, not responding to requests for comment about what provoked the Friday night confrontation and whether anyone but the officer was armed. Two others were critically injured in the shooting in Corona, which is about 40 miles (64 kilometers) east of Los Angeles.

New Network for First Responders Raises Concern Among Media
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — The police chief of Alaska's largest city hurried out of the department's glass building after the ground began to shake. Phone lines jammed and even police radios were spotty after a major earthquake, but his cellphone was recently equipped with a national wireless network dedicated to first responders.
Anchorage Police Chief Justin Doll was able to reach other officials who had the new high-speed connection after the 7.1 magnitude quake last year caused widespread damage.

One Dead, Nine Hospitalized after California HazMat Spill
LOS BANOS, Calif. (AP) — One person has died after a hazardous material spill in central California, and nine others were taken to a hospital for treatment.
Merced County Sheriff's Deputy Daryl Allen says the spill happened around noon Thursday in a rural area near Los Banos, about 80 miles (130 kilometers) east of San Jose.
He says sheriff's deputies responded to the scene and found the person who had died, along with another person who was being treated for exposure. Two ambulance staff and six deputies were also being treated for possible exposure.

Utah Teen Rescued after Slip Near Waterfall
PROVO, Utah (AP) — Authorities say a Utah teenager escaped more serious injury by grabbing an improvised rope as he fell near a waterfall.
Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon says the 17-year-old boy latched onto a garden hose after slipping near Bridal Veil Falls on Wednesday.
Cannon says he fell about 6 feet (2 meters) and hit his head, but the rope prevented him from tumbling farther down the cliff.
Rescue teams hoisted the teen from the cliff. He was transported to a Provo hospital.
Cannon says the boy was climbing up the falls with a group of teens.
