Liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica) co ‐infection with bovine tuberculosis (bTB) in cattle: a retrospective animal‐level assessment of bTB risk in dairy and beef cattle
SummaryBovine tuberculosis (bTB), caused byMycobacterium bovis, remains a persistent problem for cattle industries in endemic countries. The frequency, quality, and performance of tests, and the presence of wildlife reservoirs, have been identified as impediments to eradication. Recently, exposure to helminth infection (Fasciola hepatica) has been associated negatively with the disclosure of bTB. Here, for the first time, we assess impact of concurrent infections ofFasciola hepatica and the disclosure of bTB at the animal ‐level using large surveillance datasets. We utilised a dataset of 138,566 animal records from an aba...

Circulation and Genetic Diversity of Feline Coronavirus Type I and II From Clinically Healthy and FIP ‐Suspected Cats in China
AbstractFeline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a fatal infectious disease of wild and domestic cats, and the occurrence of FIP is frequently reported in China. To trace the evolution of type I and II feline coronavirus in China, 115 samples of ascetic fluid from FIP ‐suspected cats and 54 fecal samples from clinically healthy cats were collected from veterinary hospitals in China. The presence of FCoV in the samples was detected by RT‐PCR targeting the 6b gene. The results revealed that a total of 126 (74.6%, 126/169) samples were positive for FCoV: 75.7% ( 87/115) of the FIP‐suspected samples were positive for FCoV,...

Fetal infection with Schmallenberg virus — An experimental pathogenesis study in pregnant cows
AbstractSince its first appearance in 2011, Schmallenberg virus (SBV) has been repeatedly detected in aborted ruminant foetuses or severely malformed newborns whose mothers were naturally infected during pregnancy. However, especially the knowledge about dynamics of foetal infection in cattle is still scarce. Therefore, a total of 36 pregnant heifers were experimentally infected during two animal trials with SBV between days 60 and 150 of gestation. The foetuses were collected between 10 and 35  days after infection and virologically and pathologically investigated. Overall, 33 heifers yielded normally developed, macr...

Identification and characterization of vaccine candidates against Hyalomma anatolicum —Vector of Crimean‐Congo haemorrhagic fever virus
AbstractCrimean ‐Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a tick borne viral disease reported from different parts of the world. The distribution of the CCHF cases are linked with the distribution of the principal vector,Hyalomma anatolicum in the ecosystem. Presently, vector control is mainly dependent on repeated application of acaricides, results in partial efficacy and generated acaricide resistant tick strains. Amongst the different components of integrated management programme, immunization of hosts is considered as one of the sustainable component. To restrict CCHF virus spreading, use of anti ‐Hyalomma vaccines appea...

Molecular epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance mechanisms of Campylobacter coli from diarrhoeal patients and broiler carcasses in Belgium
AbstractThe aim of this study was to better understand the molecular epidemiology ofCampylobacter coli isolated from multiple sources in Belgium, by studying the genotypic diversity and antimicrobial resistance phenotypes and resistance mechanisms of 59C.  coli isolates. Isolates from broiler carcasses and human cases were genotyped using multilocus sequence typing (MLST),porA typing, flagellin gene A restriction fragment length polymorphism (flaA–RFLP) typing, and by PCR binary typing (P‐BIT). Thirty‐two MLST sequence types, 24flaA types, 31porA alleles, and 29 P ‐BIT types were identified among the scree...

This study investigates the historical temporal trend and geographical distribution of the foot ‐and‐mouth disease virus (FMDv) serotype C in South America; discussing the findings within the context of the actions and strategies carried out for the elimination of foot‐and‐mouth disease (FMD). This is the first time that such a comprehensive historical compilation has been carried out in the Region; hence, the study is intended as a reference and source of evidence about the presence/absence of FMDv serotype C in South America. Data on the occurrence of FMD were sourced from the Weekly Epidemiological Reports submi...
