Seroprevalence of chikungunya virus infection in five hospitals within anyigba, kogi State of Nigeria
This study determined seroprevalence of active and past CHIKV infection among febrile patients who tested negative for malaria and typhoid fever. Sera from 243 febrile patients were screened for CHIKV IgG and IgM using an immunochromatographic test kit. Clinical and socio-demographic variables were collected using a structured questionnaire. Recent CHIKV infection was observed in 5.8% of the study participants while 25.1% had IgG antibodies demonstrating previous infection. Significant associations were observed between seropositivity and age of participants (p < 0.001), sex (p = 0.044), marital status (p =...

Thermotolerance of Histoplasma capsulatum at 40 °C predominates among clinical isolates from different Latin American regions
Publication date: Available online 25 January 2020Source: The Brazilian Journal of Infectious DiseasesAuthor(s): Jorge H. Sahaza, Gabriela Rodríguez-Arellanez, Cristina E. Canteros, María del Rocío Reyes-Montes, Maria Lucia TaylorAbstractThe yeast phase of 22 Histoplasma capsulatum clinical isolates from Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, and Guatemala and three reference strains, one from Panama and two from the United States of America (USA), were screened for thermosensitivity characteristics using different analyses. Growth curves at 0, 3, 6, 12, 24, and 30 h of incubation at 37 and 40 °C, the growth inhibition perce...

Diagnostic parameters and reliability of four rapid immunochromatographic tests for dengue 4
ConclusionsFor DENV-4, the tested RITs had high specificity, but lower sensitivity compared to published results for other serotypes. They should not be used for screening purposes. Different brands may have very different performances. This should be considered upon deciding of using RITs in DENV-4 outbreaks. (Source: The Brazilian Journal of Infectious Diseases)

Influenza A and B in a cohort of outpatient children and adolescent with influenza like-illness during two consecutive influenza seasons
ConclusionsInfluenza A and B are often detected in children and adolescents with ILI episodes, with similar and mild presentation in outpatients. The mismatch between the circulating influenza viruses and the trivalent vaccine offered in Brazil may have contributed to the high frequency of influenza A and B in this population. Sporadic human cutaneous anthrax outbreak in Shaanxi Province, China: report of two cases from 2018
Publication date: Available online 9 January 2020Source: The Brazilian Journal of Infectious DiseasesAuthor(s): Yuanyuan Liu, Yongqin Li, Qiaoxia Wang, Jianjun Fu, Fanpu JiAbstractChina’s compulsory annual livestock anthrax vaccination policy has remarkably reduced but not completely eradicated human anthrax infections. Herein we describe a sporadic human cutaneous anthrax outbreak involving two cases in 2018 in Shaanxi Province, both involving herdsman who dealt with unvaccinated and potentially sick cattle. Both patients showed Bacillus anthracis-positive blister smear and blood culture. Treatment with penicillin was f...

Proposal of a clinical score to stratify the risk of multidrug-resistant gram-negative rods bacteremia in cancer patients
ConclusionsWith the growing incidence of MDR GNR as etiologic agents of bacteremia in cancer patients, the development of this score could be a potential tool for clinicians. (Source: The Brazilian Journal of Infectious Diseases)

Clinical and microbiological characteristics of cryptococcosis at an university hospital in China from 2013 to 2017
ConclusionsMost of the patients with cryptococcosis were not HIV-infected in this study, while patients with HIV had a higher mortality. Reduced susceptibility to fluconazole was observed among C. neoformans isolates, most of them belonged to ST5 genotype VNI having an impact on the effective dose of fluconazole. Measles, rubella, mumps and Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in saliva of vaccinated students of schools and universities in São Paulo City, Brazil
DiscussionThe prevalence of antibodies against mumps and rubella after 6–8 years of vaccination was lower than against measles among students. The findings of this study demonstrate the feasibility of saliva sampling for follow-up of vaccine immune status in teenagers. This useful approach allows for IgG detection for vaccine control or epidemiological studies. (Source: The Brazilian Journal of Infectious Diseases)

Differential replicative fitness of the four dengue virus serotypes circulating in Colombia in human liver Huh7 cells
This study aimed to compare the replicative fitness of the four dengue virus serotypes and understand the association between the serotypes, their in vitro infection ability, and their replication in target cells. We used three isolates of each DENV serotype to infect Huh-7 cells at an MOI of 0.5. The percentage of infected cells was evaluated by flow cytometry, cell viability was evaluated by MTT assay, and the pathogenicity index was calculated as a ratio of both parameters. The replicative fitness was measured by the number of viral genome copies produced using quantitative PCR and the production of infectious viral pro...

Factors associated to modification of first-line antiretroviral therapy due to adverse events in people living with HIV/AIDS
Publication date: Available online 10 December 2019Source: The Brazilian Journal of Infectious DiseasesAuthor(s): Larissa Negromonte Azevedo, Ricardo Arraes de Alencar Ximenes, Polyana Monteiro, Ulisses Ramos Montarroyos, Demócrito de Barros Miranda-FilhoAbstractAntiretroviral therapy (ART) has modified the outcome of patients with HIV infection, providing virological control and reducing mortality. However, there are several reasons as to why patients may discontinue their antiretroviral therapy, with adverse events being one of the main reasons reported in the literature. This is a case-control nested in a cohort of peo...
