Ocular findings in posterior microphthalmos
ConclusionDespite normal anterior segment, posterior microphthalmos is characterized with high hyperopia, and shorter axial length and bilateral papillomacular retinal fold. Refractive amblyopia, uveal effusion syndrome, retinal detachment and macular hole are complications that can be corrected. Posterior microphthalmos must be kept in mind in patients with a normal anterior segment, and high hyperopia. (Source: Saudi Journal of Ophthalmology)

Malignant hyperthermia in a 4-year-old girl during anesthesia induction with sevoflurane and succinylcholine for congenital ptosis surgery
Publication date: Available online 19 October 2018Source: Saudi Journal of OphthalmologyAuthor(s): Fehmi Ferhi, Leïla Dardour, Amel Tej, Raoudha Kebaili, Sarra M'aaref, Khaled Ben JaziaAbstractMalignant hyperthermia (MH) is a rare pharmacogenic disorder of skeletal muscle calcium regulation, resulting from general anesthesia that can be fatal. Most cases are caused by administration of volatile anesthetics or depolarizing muscle relaxants. It has been generally reported that both of sevoflurane and succinylcholine can induce the delayed onset of MH.Here, we report a case of malignant hyperthermia in a four-year-old girl du...

Intravitreal Diclofenac Versus Intravitreal Bevacizumab in Persistent Diabetic Macular Edema: Anatomical and Functional Outcome
ConclusionIn persistent DME, diclofenac has a structural effect comparable to bevacizumab on central macular thickness. However, significant functional gain may not be accomplished by single injection. Unlike naïve DME, persistent cases may be confounded by systemic and local factors necessitating repeated injection of diclofenac (Source: Saudi Journal of Ophthalmology)

Acute Allergic Reaction Caused by Topical Azithromycin Eye Drops: A Report of Two Cases
Publication date: Available online 10 October 2018Source: Saudi Journal of OphthalmologyAuthor(s): Ozgun Melike Gedar Totuk, Ayfer YukselenAbstractAzithromycin 1.5% ophthalmic solution (Azyter®, Thea Pharmaceuticals, Newcastle, UK) is an effective and well-tolerated option for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis and blepharitis, and has the advantage of a shorter treatment duration than other topical antibiotics. No acute allergic reaction has yet been reported in response to topical azithromycin eye drops. Here, we report two cases with unusual acute-type allergic reaction to topical azithromycin eye drops. A 63-ye...

Hemorrhagic occlusive retinal vasculitis leading to the diagnosis of ciliary body melanoma
We present the case of a 71-year-old female who was diagnosed with a ciliary body melanoma secondary to complete ophthalmic examination associated with HORV. She reported decreased vision to light perception in the left eye (OS) following sequential, bilateral cataract surgery. Fundus examination OS demonstrated diffuse retinal vasculitis, retinal ischemia, and extensive hemorrhage. Evaluation included inflammatory and coagulopathy laboratory evaluation, carotid ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain and orbits, all of which proved unrevealing, except for an enhancing mass OS on MRI. Further eval...

Ocular Munchausen’s syndrome induced by introduction of ant’s particles into the Conjunctival fornices
Publication date: Available online 24 September 2018Source: Saudi Journal of OphthalmologyAuthor(s): Huda Al Ghadeer, Saleh Al Othaimeen, Mohammad Al AmryAbstractMunchausen’s Syndrome is a factitious disorder in which patients manipulate physicians through misrepresented signs and symptoms. The authors describe an 18-year-old woman with self-induced inoculation of ant’s particles inside her Conjunctival fornices of both eyes. The crushed particles was confirmed to be crushed ant’s particles. Munchausen Syndrome can be seen with ophthalmic manifestations and should be considered in the differential diagnoses when ocul...

Optical coherence tomography angiography measured capillary density in normal and glaucoma eyes: RPCs and ONH capillary density in glaucoma
ConclusionsDiagnostic ability of OCT-A derived peripapillary CD and ONH CD was moderate for differentiating between the normal and glaucomatous eyes. Diagnostic ability of even the best peripapillary average and inferotemporal sector for RPC CD and average and superonasal sector for the ONH CD was moderate. (Source: Saudi Journal of Ophthalmology)

Water related ocular diseases
Publication date: July–September 2018Source: Saudi Journal of Ophthalmology, Volume 32, Issue 3Author(s): Syed Shoeb AhmadAbstractA number of ocular diseases can be attributed to contaminated water and we have coined a term “Water-related ocular diseases (WRODs)” to denote this wide-spectrum of conditions. WRODs are directly related to human contact with water and can occur through toxic, allergic, inflammatory or infective mechanisms. The non-infective causes can include chemicals used to clean swimming pools, oil spills and water-sport related injuries. Similarly, a number of infective organisms causing ocular dise...
