This study compares the changes in central corneal thickness and post op visual outcome between phacoemulsification and manual small incision cataract surgery in Indian eyes with pseudoexfoliation syndrome with grade II and III nuclear cataracts: a single surgeon series
ConclusionIn moderately hard nuclear cataracts with PXF, phacoemulsification provides better unaided visual outcome with lesser endothelial dysfunction than MSICS in immediate and late post op. (Source: Saudi Journal of Ophthalmology)

Whole genome genotyping mapped regions on chromosome 2 and 18 in a family segregating Waardenburg syndrome type II
ConclusionsIn summary, we identified novel chromosomal regions associated with Waardenburg syndrome type II in a Saudi family. Deep sequencing of a complete candidate regions are required to identify the gene underlying Waardenburg syndrome in this family. (Source: Saudi Journal of Ophthalmology)

Challenges in the Diagnosis of Microbial Keratitis: A detailed review with update and general guidelines
Publication date: Available online 11 September 2019Source: Saudi Journal of OphthalmologyAuthor(s): Hind M. Alkatan, Rakan S. Al-EssaAbstractThe incidence of microbial keratitis (MK) is variable worldwide with an estimated 1.5 to 2 million cases of corneal ulcers in developing countries. The complications of MK can be severe and vision threatening. Therefore, proper diagnosis of the causative organism is essential for early successful treatment. Accurate sampling of microbiological specimens in MK is an important step in identifying the infective organism. Corneal scrapping, tear samples and corneal biopsy are examples of...

The AFIP History of Ocular Leprosy
ConclusionsIn summary, this paper represents a series of ocular leprosy cases from the AFIP which shows the severity of ocular involvement, the predilection of anterior segment involvement and a large number of histopathologic indeterminate cases. The current immigrant and refugee crisis warrants revisting this ancient disease in the differential diagnosis. (Source: Saudi Journal of Ophthalmology)

Search for histopathological characteristics of Inflammatory Juvenile Conjunctival Nevus in conjunctival nevi related to age: analysis of 33 cases
ConclusionWe found some histopathological differences in conjunctival nevi related to young age, some of them coincident with the ones described in IJCN, which histopathologically could lead to a misleading diagnosis. However, we did not find significant differences related to age in many of the described histopathological findings described in IJCN. Larger series with a greater number of cases would be of interest to characterize more precisely this lesion. (Source: Saudi Journal of Ophthalmology)

Changing indications for enucleation and selected unusual pathologies
ConclusionWith the reducing number of eyes removed for end-stage disease and trauma, the majority of enucleations performed are now for malignancy. However, eyes are still removed for other indications. A selection of rarer pathologies is presented. (Source: Saudi Journal of Ophthalmology)

Distribution Patterns of Torpedo Maculopathy: Further Evidence of a Congenital Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer-Driven Etiology
Publication date: Available online 27 August 2019Source: Saudi Journal of OphthalmologyAuthor(s): Parker J Williams, Sherveen Salek, Robert A Prinzi, Chris Bergstrom, G Baker HubbardAbstractWith fewer than 100 peer-reviewed cases reported in the world to date, the underlying etiology of torpedo maculopathy has remained elusive. In this literature review, we provide new evidence to better support, reject and unify claims regarding cause, diagnosis, and proper clinical management of this disease. We reviewed 44 case reports and case series, which included 77 patients (after exclusions). We additionally introduced 3 new cases...

The Impact of Surgical Training on the Practice of Recently Graduated Ophthalmologists at Riyadh’s Ophthalmology Residency Program
ConclusionThis self-reported survey showed that the lack of adequate surgical exposure during residency training was the main reason of incompetency. This resulted in reduction of ophthalmologists’ future practice of surgical procedures outside the scope of their sub-specialty. This emphasizes that physicians mainly practice what they surgically acquire during their fellowship training. (Source: Saudi Journal of Ophthalmology)

Circumscribed choroidal hemangioma: Clinical features and outcomes by age category in 458 cases
ConclusionYounger patients (≤20 years) with circumscribed choroidal hemangioma present with worse visual acuity and larger, more posterior tumors. Future studies are needed to improve early detection and treatment for this subgroup of patients. (Source: Saudi Journal of Ophthalmology)

The Clinical Characteristics of Duane Retraction Syndrome in Al-Medina Region
ConclusionThis cross-sectional observational study is the first one that evaluates DRS in Al-Medina region. Associated abnormal eye movement more common when the right eye is affected. Parents' consanguinity may play a role in the occurrence of DRS as it is not considered as a rare disease in our region. Therefore, more studies are needed to establish the relationship between the occurrence of DRS and parents' consanguinity in our region. Also, further studies are needed to establish the relationship between abnormal eye movement and the involvement of the right eye. (Source: Saudi Journal of Ophthalmology)

Long-term Outcomes of Surgically Removed Migrated Polyalkylimide (Bio-Alcamid) Filler to the Periorbital Area
ConclusionsFiller migration is one of the potential complications associated with Bio-Alcamid soft tissue injection. It is important for all physicians to assess nodules/masses/swelling in the facial area to be aware that soft tissue fillers may migrate to a location away from their intended site of injection years after the injection. Patients undergoing surgical excision tend to have favorable overall long-term outcomes in terms of aesthetics and incidence of recurrence. (Source: Saudi Journal of Ophthalmology)

Uveal metastasis in 1111 patients: Interval to metastasis and overall survival based on timing of primary cancer diagnosis
ConclusionOf 1111 patients with uveal metastasis, early-onset uveal metastases were found with lung and gastrointestinal tract cancers, whereas late-onset metastases were found with breast and thyroid cancers. Overall survival did not vary on whether the primary tumor was diagnosed before, after, or never found, relative to uveal metastasis. (Source: Saudi Journal of Ophthalmology)
