Association between site of infection and in-hospital mortality in patients with sepsis admitted to emergency departments of tertiary hospitals in Medellin, Colombia
To determine the association between the primary site of infection and in-hospital mortality as the main outcome, or the need for admission to the intensive care unit as a secondary outcome, in patients with sepsis admitted to the em...

Comparison of bronchial hygiene techniques in mechanically ventilated patients: a randomized clinical trial
Conclusion: Compared to tracheal aspiration alone, the combination of hyperinflation with mechanical ventilator + vibrocompression techniques was most efficient for increasing the amount of aspirated secretions. (Source: Revista Brasileira de Terapia Intensiva)

Adequacy of enteral nutritional support in intensive care units does not affect the short- and long-term prognosis of mechanically ventilated patients: a pilot study
Conclusion: Critically ill patients receiving caloric intake ≥ 70% in the first 72 hours of hospitalization did not present better outcomes in the short term or after 1 year. (Source: Revista Brasileira de Terapia Intensiva)

The Five Times Sit-to-Stand Test: safety and reliability with older intensive care unit patients at discharge
Conclusion: The Five Times Sit-to-Stand Test was proven to be safe and to have excellent reliability. Its clinical use, however, may be restricted to high-functioning older adults in hospital settings. (Source: Revista Brasileira de Terapia Intensiva)

Pharmacological and nonpharmacological measures of pain management and treatment among neonates
Conclusion: Neonates receive few specific measures for pain relief given the high number of painful and stressful procedures performed during hospitalization. Thus, it is essential t o implement effective pain-relief protocols. (Source: Revista Brasileira de Terapia Intensiva)

Adverse events during intrahospital transport of critically ill patients in a large hospital
Conclusion: Intrahospital transport is related to a high incidence of adverse events, and transport time and the use of sedatives and vasoactive drugs were related to these events. (Source: Revista Brasileira de Terapia Intensiva)

Sociedade Portuguesa de Cuidados Intensivos guidelines for stress ulcer prophylaxis in the intensive care unit

High-flow nasal cannula in the treatment of acute hypoxemic respiratory failure in a pregnant patient: case report

Quality of life in survivors after a period of hospitalization in the intensive care unit: a systematic review

The effects of high-flow nasal cannula on intubation and re-intubation in critically ill patients: a systematic review, meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis
Conclusion: In the present study and setting, high-flow nasal cannula was not associated with a reduction of the need for intubation or re-intubation in critically ill patients. (Source: Revista Brasileira de Terapia Intensiva)

Comparisons and correlations of pain intensity and respiratory and peripheral muscle strength in the pre- and postoperative periods of cardiac surgery
Conclusion: There is a decrease in respiratory and peripheral muscle strength after cardiac surgery. In addition, maximal expiratory pressure is the variable that is most associated with peripheral muscle strength. These variables, especially respiratory and peripheral muscle strength, should be considered by professionals working in the intensive care setting. (Source: Revista Brasileira de Terapia Intensiva)

Glycemia upon admission and mortality in a pediatric intensive care unit
Conclusion: There was an increased risk of death at discharge in patients who developed hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia upon admission to the pediatric intensive care unit. Certain glucose ranges (> 200mg/dL (> 11.1mmol/L) and< 65mg/dL (3.61mmol/L)) have high specificity as predictors of death at discharge. (Source: Revista Brasileira de Terapia Intensiva)

The use of bedside echocardiography for measuring cardiac index and systemic vascular resistance in pediatric patients with septic shock
Conclusion: There was a persistently high systemic vascular resistance index in cold shock patients that influenced the stroke volume index, cardiac index, and velocity time integral. The use of echocardiograms for hemodynamic measurements is important in pediatric septic shock patients to adjust dilators, and vasopressor doses and achieve resuscitation targets in a timely manner.
