Successful use of family ‐based therapy interventions for uncontrolled type 1 diabetes in an adolescent
Abstract Adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) are at increased risk for poor treatment adherence and glycaemic lability. Parental involvement in a youth's diabetes regimen is associated with better outcomes, yet supported treatments may be inaccessible due to limited community resources and financial constraints. Furthermore, existing interventions emphasise a collaborative effort between family members, which may not be effective with youth with particular vulnerabilities. Similarities between T1DM and anorexia nervosa prompted our use of modified family‐based therapy (FBT) with a 16‐year‐old male with p...

Early postpartum glycaemic assessment in patients with gestational diabetes
Abstract Uptake of postpartum glycaemic assessment in women with gestational diabetes (GDM) has been shown to be low, with six weeks postpartum testing (as recommended by the UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) inconvenient for new mothers who prioritise their new baby over their own health at this time. As pregnancy‐related insulin resistance returns to pre‐pregnancy levels immediately after placental delivery, we hypothesised that early postpartum fasting blood glucose testing, while the mother is likely to be still in hospital, would increase uptake of postpartum glycaemic assessment. A novel proto...

Empowerment ‐based education for established type 2 diabetes in rural England
Abstract People with newly‐diagnosed type 2 diabetes are offered structured education, but there are few programmes for those with established diabetes. The empowerment‐based education approach from the United States has been advocated as one approach that supports self‐management, but is not used in England. The aim of this study was to assess the acceptability of empowerment‐based diabetes education for patients with established type 2 diabetes. One 3.5‐hour workshop was offered to participants joining a trial of peer support in rural Cambridgeshire, UK. Four main aspects of self‐care (carbohydrates and porti...
