Lentiviral vector-mediated gene transfer combined with cisplatin enhances tumor suppression in human bladder cancer cell lines
ConclusionLentiviral vector-mediated gene transduction is a promising alternative to the existing therapy in treating bladder cancer. The current protocol of CDDP-based chemotherapy may be replaced in the future. Moreover, the combination of gene therapy and chemotherapy may be an effective treatment for bladder cancer. A case of refractory serum sodium disorders with severe multiple trauma
Publication date: Available online 21 June 2019Source: Personalized Medicine UniverseAuthor(s): Kasumi Satoh, Tomoki Furuya, Manabu Okuyama, Hajime NakaeAbstractA 40-year-old man was admitted to the hospital with multiple injuries, including head injury and his laboratory results were significant for sodium abnormalities. Initially, hypernatremia was from increased sodium intake. Subsequently, hyponatremia developed that was unresponsive to sodium supplementation. Syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion or cerebral salt wasting syndrome was suspected. Additional tests suggested post-traumatic hypopituitari...

Investigation of diffusion, practical use, and utility of a medical device for Japanese hemophilia patients in a single institution
ConclusionThough personalized treatment can be formalized to some extent, it is expected that medical treatment skills and management by tacit knowledge are affected in individualized treatment based on standardized treatment. Medical institutions and medical staff are the main body sharing and deploying measures to disseminate and utilize medical devices, cooperating with them can be an effective management of standardized and individualized treatment. Lifestyle medicine – An evidence based approach to nutrition, sleep, physical activity, and stress management on health and chronic illness
Publication date: Available online 18 June 2019Source: Personalized Medicine UniverseAuthor(s): Minako Abe, Hiroyuki AbeAbstractLifestyle-related chronic illnesses, such as metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and dementia are rising at an alarming, epidemic rate. In this modern world of increasing lifespan, we are actually decreasing our health span, placing an undue burden on healthcare costs to society. Modern medicine has largely gotten away from addressing key issues to prevent or even reverse some of these chronic conditions. Yet the evidence for successful interventions in four key areas – nutrition, sleep...

CTCs as tumor antigens: A pilot study using ex-vivo expanded tumor cells to be used as lysate for DC vaccines
Publication date: Available online 14 June 2019Source: Personalized Medicine UniverseAuthor(s): Ayaka Nakamura, Minako Abe, Yasuha Ono, Yukie Saeki, Fumika Kono, Hazuki Sakuma, Ayumi Morokuma, Yoshimori Ishihara, Hiroyuki AbeAbstractThe global incidence and mortality rates of colorectal cancer is rising, and has surpassed lung cancer as the highest incidence of all types of cancers in Japan [1]. Standard treatments include surgery and chemotherapy, however immunotherapy using Dendritic Cell (DC) vaccines is also recognized as an effective treatment for many cancers including colorectal cancer. DCs are the most potent antig...

Changes of blood myokine levels following human skeletal muscle contraction using belt electrode skeletal muscle electrical stimulation
In this study, we investigated whether high sensitivity C-reactive protein, IL-6, and the anti-inflammatory cytokine, IL-10, were produced in humans by muscle contraction due to electrical stimulation. Six healthy men underwent 20 min of belt electrode skeletal muscle electrical stimulation. No time-dependent changes in IL-6, IL-10, and high sensitivity C-reactive protein were observed. These results suggest that blood myokines do not increase in response to standard electrical stimulation. (Source: Personalized Medicine Universe)

Diagnosis and treatment in the era of precision medicine – Precision medicine and tailor-made medicine
Publication date: July 2017Source: Personalized Medicine Universe, Volume 6Author(s): Masayoshi Nagata, Shigeo HorieAbstractRecently, precision medicine has gained attention in several fields of medical society. Today's medical consensus revolves around Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) built on the results of many randomized controlled trials. Ever since the advent of EBM, guidelines based on EBM have provided a basis for clinical decision-making. Treatments based on these guidelines largely improved the prognosis of a certain ailment. However, these guidelines can only provide the best fit based on the statistics. Treatments...

DNA methylation analysis of cancer-related genes from cell-free DNA of patients with cancer
Publication date: July 2017Source: Personalized Medicine Universe, Volume 6Author(s): Yukie Saeki, Minako Abe, Fumika Kono, Akane Nakazato, Yoshimori Ishihara, Hiroyuki AbeAbstractDNA methylation is a very important mechanism for regulating gene expression in normal development and cell differentiation. However, DNA methylation, when acting on the promoter region of a tumor suppressor gene, suppresses transcription and is one of the major epigenetic modifications involved in the development and progression of many cancers (Wajed et al., 2001; Morris and Chan 2015). In our laboratory, we have carried out methylation analys...

Chlorogenic acid modulates hypoxia response of Hep3B cells
Publication date: July 2017Source: Personalized Medicine Universe, Volume 6Author(s): Ferbian Milas Siswanto, Ami Oguro, Susumu ImaokaAbstractCoffee is the most widely consumed beverage around the world, and it contains many compounds that have beneficial effects on human health. Chlorogenic acid (CGA), the most abundant polyphenol in coffee, has been reported to inhibit cancer cell growth and has a beneficial effect on ameliorating aging-related diseases. We found that CGA decreased HIF-1α levels in human hepatoma cell line Hep3B under hypoxic conditions (O2 = 1%) in a dose-dependent manner, thereby decreasing the expr...
