The Japanese Society of Pathology Guidelines on the handling of pathological tissue samples for genomic research: Standard operating procedures based on empirical analyses
Genome research using appropriately collected pathological tissue samples is expected to yield breakthroughs in the development of biomarkers and identification of therapeutic targets for diseases such as cancers. In this connection, the Japanese Society of Pathology (JSP) has developed “The JSP Guidelines on the Handling of Pathological Tissue Samples for Genomic Research” based on an abundance of data from empirical analyses of tissue samples collected and stored under various conditions. Tissue samples should be collected from appropriate sites within surgically resected specimens, without disturbing the features on...

Hepatocyte growth factor activator inhibitors (HAI ‐1 and HAI‐2): Emerging key players in epithelial integrity and cancer
The growth, survival, and metabolic activities of multicellular organisms at the cellular level are regulated by intracellular signaling, systemic homeostasis and the pericellular microenvironment. Pericellular proteolysis has a crucial role in processing bioactive molecules in the microenvironment and thereby has profound effects on cellular functions. Hepatocyte growth factor activator inhibitor type 1 (HAI‐1) and HAI‐2 are type I transmembrane serine protease inhibitors expressed by most epithelial cells. They regulate the pericellular activities of circulating hepatocyte growth factor activator and cellular type II...

The prognostic significance of N ‐myc downregulated gene 1 in lung adenocarcinoma
We examined 184 lung adenocarcinomas and observed low expression of NDRG1 in adenocarcinoma in situ (AIS) and minimally invasive adenocarcinoma (MIA), whereas high expression of NDRG1 was seen in invasive adenocarcinoma. Each of the clinicopathological features except age was significantly correlated with NDRG1 expression. Kaplan‐Meier curves indicated that high expression of NDRG1 was significantly correlated with poor prognosis in comparison with low expression (log‐rank, P < 0.001). Univariate and multivariate analyses indicated that vascular invasion (P = 0.012), lymphatic permeation (P = 0.038), and...

Anaplastic variant of diffuse large B ‐cell lymphoma with hallmark cell appearance: Two cases highlighting a broad diversity in the diagnostics
The anaplastic variant of diffuse large B‐cell lymphoma (A‐DLBCL) is morphologically defined but remains an enigmatic disease in its clinicopathologic distinctiveness. Here, we report two cases involving Japanese women aged 59 years, both with A‐DLBCL with the hallmark cell appearance and both indistinguishable from common and giant cell‐rich patterns, respectively, of anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)‐positive anaplastic large cell lymphoma. Case 1 was immunohistochemically positive for CD20, CD79a and OCT‐2 but not for the other pan–B‐cell markers, CD30 and ALK. Case 2 showed CD20 and CD30 positivity for 5...

Tumor deposits in salivary gland tumors
Tumor deposits (TDs), identified in different types of carcinomas are associated with poor prognosis. Salivary gland tumors were evaluated for the first time for TDs in this series. Pathological and clinical features of 25 salivary gland carcinomas primarily treated surgically including neck dissection were determined and all cases were evaluated for TDs in dissection specimens. Seven patients (28%) had TDs. There was no difference for TDs when histological type, tumor grade, tumor localization, pT, pN stage, surgical margin, lymphovascular, perineural invasion, local recurrence, distant metastatic disease and overall surv...
