Billroth II or Roux-en-Y reconstruction for gastrojejunostomy after pancreaticoduodenectomy. Randomized controlled trial (PAUDA TRIAL)
Objectives Objectives: The primary aim of this randomized controlled trial (RCT) comparing Billroth II (BII) vs. Roux-en-Y (RY) after pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) was to test the hypothesis that RY is associated with a lower incidence rate of delayed gastric emptying (DGE) Secondary endpoints were the evaluation of postoperative complications. Laparoscopic versus open pancreatoduodenectomy (LEOPARD-2): A multicenter patient-blinded, randomized controlled trial
Objectives Laparoscopic pancreatoduodenectomy (LPD) may improve postoperative recovery but concerns exist regarding increased pancreatic fistula rates and, in low-volume centers, increased mortality . In the Netherlands, LPD was introduced within the LAELAPS-2 training program (114 LPDs, 3.5% 90-day mortality), followed by a randomized controlled trial (RCT). (Source: Pancreatology)

Type 2 diabetes mellitus and pancreatic cancer risk. An independent etiological relation?
Objectives Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has been consistently associated with an increased risk of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), but there are still some knowledge gaps about this association. For instance, T2DM seems to have a differing impact on PDAC risk depending on the duration of T2DM, which points to the existence of two T2DM subtypes in PDAC aetiology: new-onset T2DM and long-standing T2DM (LSD). The influence of diabetes-related medication on this association is also poorly understood. (Source: Pancreatology)

Exposure to cadmium is a risk factor for pancreatic cancer development: three lines of evidence
Objectives Exposure to cadmium (Cd), one of the most abundant occupational and environmental pollutants, has been hypothesized to one putative cause of pancreatic cancer (PC). Hence, the aim of this work was to provide the evidence of Cd role in PC by conducting human observational, experimental and in vitro studies. (Source: Pancreatology)

Novel pancreatic cancer susceptibility loci discovered through genome-wide association studies
Objectives Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified several regions convincingly or suggestively associated with pancreatic cancer risk. However, estimates of heritability suggest that a large number of loci remain to be discovered. To identify additional susceptibility loci, the PANcreatic Disease ReseArch (PANDoRA) consortium participated in additional GWAS, in collaboration with USA-based consortia, namely PanScan3 and PanC4. Novel metabolic targeted LC-MS/MS assay to differentiate pancreatic cancer from chronic pancreatitis in plasma
Objectives Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is characterized by a poor prognosis with overall 5-year survival rates of less than 6%. In resectable pancreatic cancer cases, the 5-year survival rates increase to 18-24%. Therefore, an early diagnosis is key of a potentially curative treatment, and screening of patients at risk is desirable. Chronic pancreatitis (CP) patients have a 26-fold increased risk for the development of pancreatic cancer. Conventional diagnostic methods such as transabdominal ultrasound and CA19-9 testing suffer from insufficient clinical performance. (Source: Pancreatology)

Comparative analysis of Circulating Tumour Cells detection and circulating tumor DNA in liquid biopsy for the diagnosis of early stage pancreatic adenocarcinoma
Objectives Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) survival can reach 20% when surgery is possible. If patients present locally advance disease, it is crucial to quickly establish resectability .However, when the cancer is suspected, chemoradiotherapies are often delayed because the mandatory histologic proof is difficult to make with non-informative biopsies. Searching for tumour elements in body fluids might provide valuable diagnosis assistance. (Source: Pancreatology)

Quantitative CT based radiomics as predictor of local resectability of pancreatic adenocarcinoma
Objectives The only cure for pancreatic cancer is surgery. However, some 20% of patients are unexpectedly unresectable due to liver or peritoneal metastases or locally advanced disease which was not predicted by the routinely performed contrast-enhanced CT scan. This means those patients had an unnecessary operation with its associated morbidity and mortality, which also reduces the quality of life and increases health care costs. This raises the question whether image based analysis techniques could help to predict resectability. (Source: Pancreatology)

Intensity of symptoms and outcomes of acute pancreatitis, a preliminary analysis of the PROMISE study
Objectives Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a frequent disease. While 2 out of 3 patients have an uneventful course of disease, one third of them have local and/or systemic complications, which are associated to increased hospital stay, morbidity and mortality. Our aim was to study the relationship between symptoms perceived by patients and complications in patients with AP. (Source: Pancreatology)

Impact of obesity on the prognosis of an acute pancreatitis
Objectives Obesity is well-known risk factor of acute pancreatitis (AP). Negative impact of obesity on severity and prognosis of AP has not been used practically for better prediction and AP management optimization. The aim of the study was to analyze influence of individual fat parameters on severity of AP. (Source: Pancreatology)

Determinants of length of hospital stay in mild acute pancreatitis
Objectives Acute pancreatitis is one of the most frequent causes of hospitalization related to gastrointestinal pathology. Therefore, it constitutes an important area of hospital spending, directly related to the length of hospital stay. In most cases it has a mild course, without local or systemic complications and with self-limited pain. Our target was to analyze factors related to hospital stay in patients with mild acute pancreatitis (MAP). (Source: Pancreatology)

Diagnosis of intestinal failure and its impact on prognosis in patients with acute necrotizing pancreatitis
Objectives Acute necrotizing pancreatitis (ANP) is potentially lethal inflammatory process. Recent researches established that presence of multiorgan failure together with pancreatic infection are major determinants of its mortality. But significance of different organs failure, especially intestinal dysfunction in course of acute necrotizing pancreatitis is still remaining unclear. Objective of our study was to determine frequency and significance of intestinal failure on severity and mortality of ANP. (Source: Pancreatology)

Descriptive analysis of patient outcomes following plasmapheresis for hypertriglyceridemia-induced acute pancreatitis
Objectives Therapeutic plasmapheresis is one of the treatment modalities for lowering triglycerides in acute pancreatitis secondary to hypertriglyceridemia. However, hypertriglyceridemia in the setting of acute pancreatitis is considered a weak indication for treatment given limited robust outcome data. In review of the literature, three case series have been reported over the last decade from single centers in Spain and the United States, with a total of 34 patients. We review the outcomes of plasmapheresis treatment for acute pancreatitis caused by hypertriglyceridemia in hospitalized patients. (Source: Pancreatology)
