Olfactory and Gustatory Functions after Anterior Palatoplasty in Patients with Primary Snoring
Conclusion Patients scheduled for AP should be properly informed about potential postoperative taste and flavor changes. They should also be warned of a possible loss of appetite due to a postoperative decrease in the umami taste sensation of the soft palate. (Source: Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery)

Inhibition of Inflammation-Associated Olfactory Loss by Etanercept in an Inducible Olfactory Inflammation Mouse Model
Conclusion Concomitant administration of etanercept in IOI mice results in interruption of TNF-α-induced olfactory loss and induction of neuroepithelial regeneration. This demonstrates that etanercept has potential utility as a tool for elucidating the role of TNF-α in other olfactory inflammation models. (Source: Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery)

Lateral Skull Base Attenuation in Patients with Anterior Cranial Fossa Spontaneous Cerebrospinal Fluid Leaks
Conclusions Patients with anterior fossa SCSF leaks demonstrate attenuation of the lateral skull base. A significant correlation between anterior skull base thickness and lateral skull base thickness was observed. BMI was inversely related to lateral skull base thickness. Taken together, SCSF leaks are associated with obesity, which appears to be partly responsible for diffuse skull base erosion observed in patients with this condition. Anatomic Changes Caused by Endoscopic Endonasal Transsphenoidal Surgery and Their Effects on Nasal Functions
Conclusion Endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal approach surgery altered the patients’ nasal anatomy, but the changes in nasal cavity dimensions did not affect nasal functions and symptoms. These results will help surgeons to appropriately expose the surgical field during endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal approach surgery. (Source: Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery)

Prevalence of Voice Disturbances in the Pediatric Craniofacial Patient Population
Conclusion Pediatric patients with craniofacial disorders have a higher prevalence of dysphonia than the general pediatric population. The majority of causes of dysphonia in these patients are possibly iatrogenic in origin. The pVHI serves as a useful questionnaire in this unique patient cohort to quantify the disability from not only dysphonia but also hypernasality and hyponasality. Pediatric Endoscopic Cholesteatoma Surgery
Conclusion The present report describes our experience with pediatric endoscopic cholesteatoma surgery, demonstrating similar hearing outcomes, rates of recurrence and residual disease, and complication rates as compared with traditional microscopic techniques. Cholesterol Granuloma Development following Temporal Bone Surgery
Conclusion Postoperative CG formation in the temporal bone is a rare occurrence that can be encountered years following surgery. The present study suggests that conservative management can be appropriate for many cases in which patients are relatively asymptomatic. (Source: Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery)

Effects of Cell-Based Therapy for Treating Tympanic Membrane Perforations in Mice
Conclusions The topical application of bone marrow–derived MSCs enhances the healing of TMPs in this animal model and is a promising alternative to tympanoplasty. (Source: Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery)

Diode Laser Stapedotomy vs Conventional Stapedotomy in Otosclerosis: A Double-Blinded Randomized Clinical Trial
Conclusion Hearing outcomes and complications of DLS were similar to CMS. These study findings confirm the efficacy of the diode laser in stapedotomy, but DLS offers no advantages over CMS for otosclerosis surgery. (Source: Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery)

Surgical and Audiologic Outcomes in Endoscopic Stapes Surgery across 4 Institutions
Conclusions The present multicentered study of endoscopic stapes surgery demonstrates similar audiometric and postoperative outcomes previously published in the literature, with a median postoperative air-bone gap of 9.0 dB HL. Future prospective endoscopic stapes surgery studies, addressing the need for scutum removal, postoperative taste changes, and pain scores, are merited. Contralateral Vocal Fold Reactive Lesions: Nomenclature, Treatment Choice, and Outcome
Conclusions Reactive lesions have not been well classified, and treatments are based on subjective intraoperative decision making with unpredictable outcomes. The nomenclature proposed will allow for a better definition of the RL and provide a framework for future research to identify optimal treatment. (Source: Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery)

Scanning Electron Microscopy of the Presbylarynx
Conclusion Scanning electron microscopy identified several changes in the elderly larynx, differentiating it from the controls. These alterations are probably related to the aging process of the vocal folds. However, the exact interpretation of these findings requires additional studies, even to the molecular level, having the fibroblasts as targets. (Source: Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery)

A Charge Comparison of Audiometric Testing in the Pediatric Population
Conclusion Objective testing with a combination of tympanometry and otoacoustic emissions charges insurers $67 less than an audiogram. Given the questionable reliability of behavioral audiometry in very young children, this is a factor to consider when choosing the appropriate test. With a large number of pediatric auditory hearing tests performed each year, the cost savings within the health care system could be substantial. (Source: Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery)
