Evidence-Based Insights into the Utility of Conjunctival Biopsy in Mucous Membrane Pemphigoid
Mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP) is the terminology used to describe a group of chronic subepithelial inflammatory disorders that cause both inflammation and progressive cicatrization of mucosal membranes and skin. Of greatest interest to the ophthalmologist, MMP may affect the ocular mucosa, which if left untreated is often sight threatening. However, MMP also affects the oral, anal, genital, nasopharyngeal, esophageal, and laryngeal mucosa, as well  as skin, resulting in multisystem disease including life-threatening airway obstruction. Fuller et  al (p. 476) analyzed data from a nationwide cross-sectional survey to examine the relationship between sensory impairments and cognitive and functional difficulties. They found that the estimated nationwide prevalence of self-reported serious vision impairment (SVI) is 2.8%, serious hearing impair ment (SHI) is 6%, and serious dual sensory impairment (DSI) is 1.6% among 7 210 535 individuals aged 45 or older from the 5-year American Community Survey 2011–2015 Public Use Microdata Sample.

Blue Nevi of the Ocular Surface
Blue nevus is a melanocytic tumor that is commonly found in the skin. Extracutaneous presentations, including the ocular surface, are rare. As such, the purpose of this study was to characterize the clinical features and clinical course of congenital melanocytic tumor (blue nevus) of the conjunctiva. (Source: Ophthalmology)

Incidence, Risk Factors, and Management of Blindness after Orbital Surgery
Severe vision loss is a risk of orbital surgery which physicians should counsel patients about, but the overall risk rate is unknown. This research was conducted to determine the risk of severe vision loss related to orbital surgery. (Source: Ophthalmology)
