Influence of pH and phosphate concentration on the phosphate binding capacity of five contemporary binders. An in vitro study
Abstract IntroductionHyperphosphatemia is associated with increased mortality and morbidity in end stage renal disease. Despite phosphate binder therapy, a large proportion of patients does not reach the treatment target. In five contemporary binders we explored the influence of pH and phosphate concentration on phosphate binding. . This interaction could be of relevance in clinical practice. MethodsPhosphate binding was quantified in vitro in 25 ml of purified water containing phosphate concentrations of 10, 15 and 20 mM and baseline pH values of 3.0 or 6.0, with a binder over 6 hours. Lanthanum carbonate, calcium acetate...

Long ‐term clinicopathologic observation in a case of steroid‐resistant nephrotic syndrome caused by a novel Crumbs homolog 2 mutation
We report the long‐term clinicopathologic observation of a Japanese female patient with SRNS caused by a newly identified compound heterozygous mutation of CRB2 (p.Arg628Cys and p.Gly839Trp located in the 10th and 11th epidermal growth factor‐like domains, respectively). She was initially examined during a mass urinary mass screening for 3.5‐year‐old children in Japan. Although she developed long‐standing SRNS without any extrarenal clinical signs thereafter, her renal function was well‐preserved over the next 17 years. In total, 6 sequential renal biopsy specimens revealed histologic alterations ranging from m...

Gastrointestinal Symptoms in Patients Receiving Dialysis: A Systematic Review
ConclusionsGI symptoms are highly prevalent in people on dialysis; however, the evidence base is limited and further investigation of preventable causes and potential interventions such as medications and diet is required in future research. (Source: Nephrology)

Coronary artery calcification score and common iliac artery calcification score in non ‐dialysis CKD patients
ConclusionChronic kidney disease related risk factors for VC, such as the eGFR and hyperphosphataemia, are significantly associated with a high CACS, but not a high IACS, and the CACS is a significant predictor of progression to RRT. (Source: Nephrology)
