Efficacy of intestinal microbiota transplantation in ulcerative colitis: a review of current literature and knowledge.
Authors: Newman KM, Vaughn BP Abstract Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) results in chronic inflammation in the intestine and is thought to arise from an abnormal immune response to host commensal bacteria. The current treatment paradigm for IBD is focused on suppression of the immune system. However, intestinal microbiota transplant (IMT) may present an avenue to treat IBD by altering the target of inflammation without necessitating immune suppression. Presently, reports of the greatest success with IMT in IBD have been with ulcerative colitis (UC). Four randomized controlled trials have evaluated the effi...

Blue light emitting diodes cripple Helicobacter pylori by targeting its virulence factors.
CONCLUSIONS: Collectively, the results of our in vitro study indicate that therapy with blue LED may be an added weapon in the eradication of H. pylori by targeting the virulence factors of this very common pathogen. We envisage that phototherapy will have an adjuvant effect on conventional anti-H. pylori therapy, especially considering its efficacy in biofilm disruption and the fact that microorganisms are unlikely to develop resistance as a result of the multi-target effects. Urotensin II receptor expression in patients with ulcerative colitis: a pilot study.
CONCLUSIONS: UTR could be considered as an inflammatory UC disease marker because its expression is greater in the mucosa of ill colon than in the healthy colon of the same patients and compared to healthy controls. Cancer risk, screening and surveillance in primary sclerosing cholangitis.
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with PSC show significantly higher than average risk for the development of hepatobiliary and colonic malignancies including cholangiocarcinoma, gallbladder carcinoma and colorectal carcinoma. Yearly ultrasound surveillance followed with more definitive cross sectional imaging is prudent to arrive in a timely diagnosis of carcinoma, reducing morbidity and mortality. The gut and the Inflammatory Bowel Diseases inside-out: the extra-intestinal manifestations.
Authors: Ribaldone DG, Pellicano R, Actis GC Abstract An increasing deal of attention is being conveyed on the extra-intestinal manifestations of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). We compiled the present review in an attempt to upgrade the accuracy of the classification of such polymorphic entities. We focused on three patterns. First, the conventional extra-intestinal manifestations localized to bone and joints, to the eye, to the biliary tree and to the skin. Second, the so-called IBD-like syndromes accompanied by bone marrow-derived anomalies of innate or acquired immunity. Third, specific disorders of...

Helicobacter pylori and hematological disorders.
Authors: Santambrogio E, Orsucci L Abstract Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is one of the most common worldwide infection, which can affect adults as children. The prevalence of this bacterium is variable in different countries, depending on various hygienic and socioeconomic conditions and living customs. The major damaged tissues of the infection are in the upper gastrointestinal tract, causing gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcer and gastrointestinal malignancy. Nevertheless, other disorders are associated with this pathogen, including several hematological diseases, such as iron deficiency anemia, imm...

Oral iron supplementation with Feralgine ® in inflammatory bowel disease: a retrospective observational study.
CONCLUSIONS: Oral supplementation with Feralgine® induced a significant improvement in Hb levels, suggesting that in IBD patients with mild or moderate anemia, oral iron supplementation could be considered the first line therapy. We suggest further studies on larger cohorts to assess iron, ferritin and transferrin saturation improvement after this treatment.
