Rheumatic manifestations in inflammatory bowel disease.
Authors: Finucci A, Ditto MC, Parisi S, Borrelli R, Priora M, Realmuto C, Fusaro E Abstract Rheumatic manifestations are the most frequent extra-intestinal manifestations (EIMs) in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) patients, and they are responsible for a relevant reduction of quality of life. IBD is associated with a variety of musculoskeletal manifestations such as arthritis and non-inflammatory pain as well as with metabolic diseases, such as osteoporosis. Different imaging techniques (primarily ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging and X-rays) can help the clinician to correctly identify the nature of ...

The relationship between Helicobacter pylori and chronic kidney disease: update 2020.
Authors: Zizzi CF, Pellicano R, Biancone L Abstract A number of studies has confirmed that the epidemiology of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is changing worldwide, with a decrease especially in developed Countries. Nevertheless, since this Gram-negative bacterium infects almost 50% of the world's population, it remains a global problem. Beyond its role in the pathogenesis of the main gastroduodenal diseases, including gastritis, peptic ulcer and gastric cancer, H. pylori has been suspected to be involved in several extra-gastroduodenal disorders. Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) present gastric...

Management of functional dyspepsia in the year 2020. A clinical point of view.
Authors: Mosso E, Bonetto S, Longobardi G, Abenavoli L, Ribaldone DG, Saracco GM, Pellicano R Abstract Dyspepsia is a disorder that refers mainly to central upper abdominal pain or discomfort. When a cause of this symptom is not identified the condition is termed functional dyspepsia (FD), that affects a large part of the general population. The relevance of FD is due to its high prevalence, but also to its chronic or intermittent course. This induces a significant burden for each national healthcare system. The pathogenesis of FD is complex and multifactorial, depending on cultural, environmental and biol...

Irritable Bowel Syndrome and lactose intolerance: the importance of differential diagnosis. A monocentric study.
CONCLUSIONS: We can affirm that most patients with initial diagnosis of IBS are, instead, lactose intolerant. This diagnosis allows us to undertake an adequate therapy so as to improve symptoms and quality of life. Therefore it is important to include LI in the pathologies with which IBS enters into differential diagnosis. Role of Compositum Zeolite ® in management of inflammatory bowel disease: a pilot study.
CONCLUSIONS: Compositum Zeolite® has a compliance rate similar to the other prescribed therapies and is a good addon therapy to improve activity indexes, mainly in Crohn's disease. It also seems to improve inflammatory indexes, even if maybe dose or time of therapy were insufficient to reach a full negativization of these parameters. Non-cirrhotic portal hypertension in inflammatory bowel disease.
Authors: Mir AS, Sorrentino D Abstract With the increasing incidence and prevalence of IBD, its complications and associated morbidity also continue to rise. One of these is non-cirrhotic portal hypertension. There is an increasing need of recognizing and understanding the pathophysiology of this condition in the clinical setting of IBD, especially in long standing cases. Due to multiple potential factors, patients with IBD appear to be at a higher risk of developing portal hypertension even in the absence of liver cirrhosis. Portal hypertension is usually diagnosed when complications (such as ascites, var...

Pilot study on non-celiac gluten sensitivity: effects of Bifidobacterium longum ES1 co-administered with a gluten-free diet.
CONCLUSIONS: Although carried out on a small number of patients, our pilot trial leads us to conclude that a combined strategy of naturally gluten-free diet therapy with administration of the probiotic strain ES1 appears to offer a greater advantage than the dietary regime alone in improving the clinical symptomatic picture and in stabilizing the intestinal microbiota.
