Insulin resistance and hepatic steatosis in type 1 diabetes mellitus and their association with diabetic chronic complications.
CONCLUSIONS: Insulin resistance and hepatic steatosis are common in type 1 diabetes and have a significant association with ICVD, independently of diabetes duration, control and insulin doses. PMID: 33006467 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Minerva Endocrinologica)

Vitamin D3 deficiency is associated with more severe insulin resistance and metformin use in patients with type 2 diabetes.
CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrated that vit. D3 deficiency in patients with T2D was associated with more severe IR, poor glycemic control and obesity compared to normal status or vit. D3 insufficiency. PMID: 33000618 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Minerva Endocrinologica)

Male hypogonadism: therapeutic choices and pharmacological management.
Authors: La Vignera S, Izzo G, Emerenziani GP, Cannarella R, Condorelli RA, Calogero AE, Aversa A Abstract Male hypogonadism, defined as an inadequate testosterone production, recognizes a testicular (primary hypogonadism) or a hypothalamic-pituitary dysfunction (central hypogonadism), although combined forms can also occur. Moreover, it has been known that intensive exercise training might be a cause of functional hypogonadism. Many therapeutic choices are currently available, depending on the timing of hypogonadism onset and fertility issue. The aim of this review was to comprehensively supply therapeuti...

The possible role of endocrine dysfunction of adipose tissue in gestational diabetes mellitus.
Authors: Šimják P, Anderlová K, Cinkajzlová A, Pařízek A, Kršek M, Haluzík M Abstract Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is diabetes that is first diagnosed in the second or third trimester of pregnancy in patients who did not have a history of diabetes before pregnancy. Consequences of GDM include increased risk of macrosomia and birth complications in the infant and an increased risk of maternal type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) after pregnancy. There is also a longer-term risk of obesity, T2DM, and cardiovascular diseases in the child. GDM is the result of impaired glucose tolerance due to pancre...

Is hemithyroidectomy sufficient in unilateral benign nodular goitre?
CONCLUSIONS: Due to low reoperation risk and acceptable permanent hypothyroidism rates, hemithyroidectomy is a viable option for benign goitre cases. The patients should be on follow-up for possible complications, especially hypothyroidism, for at least a year. PMID: 32969625 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Minerva Endocrinologica)

Subclinical male hypogonadism.
CONCLUSIONS: Although available evidence suggests that in aging populations SHG can be considered a particular condition associated with an increased CV risk, it is still unknown if treatment with T can improve any outcomes in these subjects. Hence, further interventional studies are advisable in order to better understand the characteristics of SHG and the possible advantages of an early TRT. A favorable effect on nutritional status of 12-week tailored texture-modified sous-vide cooking meals in institutionalized elderly women with oropharyngeal dysphagia: an intervention study.
CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that elderly dysphagic women at long-term care facilities can eat better and increase nutritional status by eating 12-week tailored appealing TTMSVC. PMID: 32969627 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Minerva Endocrinologica)

A new breakfast brioche containing bergamot fiber prevents insulin and glucose increase in healthy volunteers: a pilot study.
CONCLUSIONS: The association of wheat bran and bergamot fiber significantly influences glucose metabolism and may exert insulin-like effects on healthy volunteers. If confirmed, Bergabrioche would be a useful tool in preventing diabetes and controlling the glycometabolic status of Type 2 diabetic patients. Endocrinological disorders and inflammatory skin diseases during COVID-19 outbreak. A review of the literature.
CONCLUSIONS: Our study pays attention on medium-long term effects of COVID-19 outbreak on inflammatory skin disorders, due to the lifestyle changes. In such context this review considers how a multidisciplinary approach, involving dermatologists, nutritionists and endocrinologists, may lead to a better management of dermatologic patients. Mediterranean diet and breast cancer risk: a narrative review.
Authors: Laudisio D, Castellucci B, Barrea L, Pugliese G, Savastano S, Colao A, Muscogiuri G Abstract Breast cancer is the second most frequent type of cancer worldwide and the most commonly occurring malignancy in women, and its incidence is increasing in most developed and developing countries. There is growing evidence that lifestyle factors, in particular diet may be associated with higher Breast Cancer risk. Some evidence exists regarding the benefit of Mediterranean Diet on reduced risk of Breast Cancer in premenopausal and postmenopausal women. The protective effect of the Mediterranean Diet against...

Oxidative stress as a key feature of autoimmune thyroiditis: an update.
CONCLUSIONS: Oxidant/antioxidant imbalance represent a key feature of thyroid autoimmunity. Oxidative stress parameters could be used as biochemical markers of chronic inflammation, to better predict the disease evolution along its natural history. Dietary habits and antioxidant supplements may provide protection from autoimmunity, opening new perspectives in the development of more tailored therapies. Evaluation of vitamin D receptor gene polymorphisms in patients with differentiated thyroid carcinomas and nodular goiter.
CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study in the literature evaluating the role of VDR gene SNPs in nodular goiter. We can suggest that SNP distribution in the VDR gene is not associated with malignancy but may cause some alterations in thyrocyte morphology and functions. Thyroid papillary carcinoma arising in ectopic thyroid tissue within sternocleidomastoid muscle: case report and review of current literature.
Authors: Barrea L, Fonderico F, Di Somma C, Pugliese G, De Alteriis G, Mascolo M, Colao A, Savastano S Abstract The prevalence of ectopic thyroid tissue as consequence of an aberrant migration of thyroid during embryogenesis ranges up to 10% in autopsy studies. The differential diagnosis between the relatively rare occurrence of a primary carcinoma arising in ectopic thyroid tissue and the more frequent presence of cervical lymph node metastasis from papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) might represent a difficult challenge in the clinical practice. The clinical relevance of these lesions lies in their risk o...

Early and delayed puberty among Iranian children with obesity.
CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrated no association between obesity and early puberty in girls; however, boys with obesity had delayed puberty. We also found higher birth weight is associated with earlier onset of obesity, putting light on the importance of preventive interventions. Subclinical hypothyroidism.
Authors: Chbat J, Ezzat S, Papi G Abstract Subclinical hypothyroidism - i.e., a condition characterized by serum TSH concentrations above the normal reference range in the presence of normal serum T4 levels - affects 4 to 20% of the population living in iodine-sufficient areas. The present work reviews the clinical challenges regarding, on the one hand, the signs and symptoms possibly related to subclinical hypothyroidism, and on the other hand, the most recent guideline recommendations to treatment.
