Severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus 2 and novel coronavirus disease 2019: An extraordinary pandemic
Sheetu Singh, Bharat Bhushan SharmaLung India 2020 37(3):268-271 COVID-19 has emerged as one of the most significant illnesses of the current century. It is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. The world was initially viewing it as a localized outbreak in Wuhan city of China; however, it started spreading quickly to other parts of the world. Globally, half-hearted containment measures and a false sense of safety against this novel coronavirus led to the dissemination of disease. Currently, no effective therapy or vaccine is available to manage this illness. After learning a huge lesson, global effort...

Sterilization of N95 respirators: The time for action is upon us!
Arjun Prakash, Harshavardhan B Rao, Priya Nair, Surabhi Talwar, V Anil Kumar, Deepak TalwarLung India 2020 37(3):260-262 Re-processing of primary protective equipment is the need of the hour with healthcare systems all over the world strained due to the shortage precipitated by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. The common methods of re-sterilization do not hold well for filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs) as they affect their structure and function. We propose the validation and eventual use of gamma irradiation, an already existing method of re-sterilization, to disinfect FFRs in bulk. (Source: Lung India)

Bronchopulmonary arteriovenous malformation presenting as cryptogenic hemoptysis in a patient with bicuspid aortic valve
We report the case of a 44-year-old male patient with bicuspid aortic valve, presenting with hemoptysis. Catheter angiography revealed an abnormal communication between bronchial and pulmonary artery, which remained undetected on computed tomography angiography. Angioembolization was done using polyvinyl alcohol and gelfoam particles. This is the first case in literature describing bronchial arteriovenous malformation associated with bicuspid aortic valve. Reversible sirolimus-induced pulmonary alveolar proteinosis in a renal transplant patient
David Eugenio Hinojosa-González, Daniel Dávila-González, Gustavo Salgado-Garza, Eduardo Flores-VillalbaLung India 2020 37(3):252-256 Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP) is characterized by accumulation of surfactant-like lipoprotein material within distal bronchioles and alveoli due to impaired clearance. Clinically, PAP presents with dyspnea and cough. A 58-year-old Hispanic man presented with 6 months of productive cough, weight loss, and progressively worsening dyspnea. He reported a long history of poorly controlled type 2 diabetes that led to diabetic nephropathy. The patient had ...

Nasopharyngeal wash in preventing and treating upper respiratory tract infections: Could it prevent COVID-19 ?
Sheetu Singh, Neeraj Sharma, Udaiveer Singh, Tejraj Singh, Daya Krishan Mangal, Virendra SinghLung India 2020 37(3):246-251 Rapid transmission of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 has led to the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The current emphasis is on preventive strategies such as social distancing, face mask, and hand washing. The technique of nasopharyngeal wash to prevent the virus from inhabiting and replicating in the nasal and pharyngeal mucosa has been suggested to be useful in reducing symptoms, transmission, and viral shedding in cases of viral acute respiratory tract infec...

Pattern of InhA and KatG mutations in isoniazid monoresistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates
Conclusion: Knowledge about mutation patterns of different INH resistant strains is important in the present era where there is a provision of separate regimens for INH monoresistant TB. Since these mutations are very closely related to high- or low-degree resistance to INH, the therapeutic regimens cannot be generalized. (Source: Lung India)
