A Meta-Analysis Comparing Lobectomy versus Segmentectomy in Stage I Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer.
The objective of this study was to compare 5-year survival, recurrence-free survival, postoperative mortality, and postoperative morbidities in patients who received segmentectomy versus those who received lobectomy through a meta-analysis. Sixteen studies were included and the combined hazard ratios or odds ratios were calculated. The results revealed that the 5-year survival rate after segmentectomy was comparable to that of lobectomy for stage IA NSCLC. However, segmentectomy for stage I NSCLC had lower rates of postoperative mortality and morbidities than lobectomy. PMID: 31404409 [PubMed] (Source: Korean Journ...

Preoperative Risk Factors for Pathologic N2 Metastasis in Positron Emission Tomography-Computed Tomography-Diagnosed N0-1 Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer.
Conclusion: More invasive procedures should be considered when pre-operative risk factors are identified in order to improve the efficacy of diagnostic and therapeutic plans and, consequently, the patient's prognosis. Aortic Reconstruction Using a Main Pulmonary Artery Flap in an Isolated Aortopulmonary Window.
Authors: Shin HJ, Jung Y, Shin JS Abstract Aortopulmonary window (APW) is a rare cardiac anomaly that was reported to occur in only 43 cases over 33 years at a large-volume cardiac center. It can present as an isolated anomaly or in combination with another cardiac anomaly. The surgical technique for APW has evolved from simple ligation to separation of the 2 great arteries. However, because of the rarity of APW, there is no standard surgical treatment for this disease entity. Herein, we present successful aortic reconstruction using a main pulmonary artery flap after separation of the 2 great arteries in ...

Thoracotomy versus Video-Assisted Thoracoscopy in Pediatric Empyema.
Conclusion: Our results indicate that VATS was not only less invasive than thoracotomy, but also showed promising results, such as an earlier discharge from the hospital and fewer postoperative complications. PMID: 31236371 [PubMed] (Source: Korean Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery)

Prognostic Factors in Stage IIB Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer according to the 8th Edition of TNM Staging System.
Conclusion: The stage migration from seventh-edition stage IIA NSCLC to eighth-edition stage IIB NSCLC was appropriate in terms of oncological outcomes. Visceral pleural invasion was the only prognostic factor in patients with eighth-edition stage IIB NSCLC. PMID: 31236372 [PubMed] (Source: Korean Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery)

Comparison of Uniportal versus Multiportal Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery Pulmonary Segmentectomy.
Conclusion: Our preliminary experience indicates that uniportal VATS segmentectomy is safe and feasible in well-selected patients. A randomized, prospective study with a large group of patients and long-term follow-up is necessary to confirm these results. Ventricular Septal Defect Closure in a Neonate with Osteogenesis Imperfecta.
Authors: Jang WS, Choi HJ, Kim JB, Kim JH Abstract A male patient weighing 2.5 kg was admitted for respiratory difficulty, and a large ventricular septal defect (VSD) was diagnosed. During care, sudden right leg swelling with a femur shaft fracture occurred. The patient's father had a history of recurrent lower extremity fractures; thus, osteogenesis imperfecta was considered. The patient's respiratory difficulty became aggravated, and VSD repair in the neonatal period was therefore performed with gentle sternal traction and great vessel manipulation under total intravenous anesthesia to prevent malignant ...

Congenital Esophageal Atresia Associated with a Tracheobronchial Remnant.
Authors: Wu Y, Wu C Abstract A rare case of esophageal atresia/tracheo-esophageal fistula (EA-TEF) with an associated tracheobronchial remnant (TBR) is reported and discussed herein. A 13-month-old patient was seen with a complaint of vomiting of solid food 1 year after EA-TEF repair. An esophagogram showed a tapered narrowing in the lower segment of the esophagus. A re-operation was carried out and a pathologic examination of the resected stenotic segment revealed the presence of a TBR. Successful Diagnosis and Treatment of a Pancreaticopleural Fistula in a Patient Presenting with Unusual Empyema and Hemoptysis.
Authors: Kim E, Ahn HY, Kim YD, Hoseok, Cho JS Abstract Pancreaticopleural fistula (PPF) is a rare complication in patients with pancreatitis. Its symptoms are similar to those of empyema or pleural effusion; therefore, it is important to consider PPF in the differential diagnosis. Herein, we describe the diagnosis and treatment of PPF in a patient presenting with unusual empyema and delayed hemoptysis.
