Changing Nursing Practice: The Role of the Editorial Process
We enter academic nursing with noble intentions: to call attention to the big questions and discover equally big answers; to channel our curiosities toward some social good and make better the lives of patients, families, and communities; to create and expand the evidence that informs our practice; to carve out niches and develop our own programs of research that will improve our patients ’ health. The AIDS Pandemic: Searching for a  Global Response
Michael Merson, the second Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Program on AIDS, and co-author Stephen Inrig have described, in gripping detail, the personal antagonisms, interpersonal wrangling, and bureaucratic intrigue that explained the failure of the first global response to the HIV epidemic (Merson& Inrig, 2018). However, I believe that the decision of WHO, Western researchers, and the media to ignore the role of reuse of contaminated syringes and needles in health care settings and to instead emphasize African people's sex with multiple partners was more critical in the explosion of HIV in Africa t...

Integration of Anal Dysplasia Screening into the Primary Care of Persons Living with HIV
Anal dysplasia can lead to anal cancer, which affects persons living with HIV (PLWH) more than people in the general population. Screening for anal dysplasia is recommended to detect anal cancer at an early stage. The aim of our process improvement project was to improve compliance and consistency, implementing anal dysplasia screening for PLWH receiving care at a Ryan White facility covering 18 counties in western North Carolina. There were 291 PLWH screened for anal dysplasia during the 9-month data-gathering period. (Source: Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care)

Shaping the Patient-Centered Medical Home to the Needs of HIV Safety Net Patients: The Impact of Stigma and the Need for Trust
The patient-centered medical home (PCMH) is a promising model for increasing the efficiency and quality of HIV care. We evaluated the implementation of PCMH-related demonstration projects in HIV care settings serving safety net populations. We conducted 113 qualitative interviews with key informants and patients to understand which PCMH components were perceived as best meeting patient medical and support service needs. Our results demonstrate the value and limitations of the PCMH, as currently conceived, for HIV care settings. (Source: Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care)

Support for PrEP among New Jersey health care workers
We used an online survey of health care workers in New Jersey to assess awareness, perceptions, and support of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). We sampled respondents from diverse health care worker occupations, in HIV and non-HIV care settings. Of174 participants, awareness of PrEP was high at 91% (n=122), as was support for its use by members of at-risk groups (74%). Occupation was the only independent variable with significant variation in support of PrEP, with 41% of disease intervention specialists/health educators supporting PrEP completely, compared to93%of nurses. Preventing HIV Infection in High-Risk Adolescents Using Preexposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)
Preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has emerged as a major tool in the prevention of HIV infection. Appropriate use of once-daily emtricitabine 200  mg and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate 300 mg (Truvada®; Gilead, Foster City, CA) in combination with safer sex activities significantly reduces the risk of HIV infection. Trials initially supported efficacy of PrEP in adults, prompting its approval for adult use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administ ration (FDA) in July 2012 (Gilead, 2018). Due to growing data suggesting PrEP as beneficial in preventing HIV in high-risk adolescents, the FDA approved it for prevention of HIV in this ...

Factors that Influence Sexual and Reproductive Health Information Offered to Adolescents with Perinatally-Acquired HIV: An Ecological Analysis of Provider Perspectives
The goal of our project was to examine health and social service provider views of factors that influence the nature and timing of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) information shared with adolescents with perinatally-acquired HIV (PHIV). Health care (n=6) and social service (n=7) providers (11.6 mean years caring for adolescents with PHIV) completed audiorecorded interviews which were transcribed, and coded for emerging themes. Analyses revealed multiple levels of influence best understood in the context of the ecological model. (Source: Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care)

My how times have changed …interprofessional collaboration is in the house
As Judy and I sit here today as active members of our local ANAC chapter, the national organization, and the board of directors, we can only reflect on the growth and advancement of our organization, particularly as it relates to the changed perspectives regarding interprofessional collaboration amongst the membership. The concepts, principles, and methods inherent in interprofessional education (IPE) and collaborative practice are both endorsed by ANAC. They are the preferences considered foundational to the delivery of quality HIV care and treatment. (Source: Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care)
