“It Was a Learning Experience”: Lessons Learned From Young African American Men and Women's Sexual Debut
An estimated 38,356 adolescents and young adults ages 13 to 24  years are living with HIV infection in the United States (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2017). A disproportionate number of these infections are among young African American men and women. Approximately 59% of males and 64% of females ages 13 to 24 living with HIV infection are African American (CDC, 2017). African Americans comprise more than half (55%) of new HIV diagnoses among youth (CDC, 2017). Young African American men and women are also greatly burdened by sexually transmitted infections (STI) such as chlamydia and gonorrhea, which...

My Journey as an AIDS Nurse
Until the HIV epidemic, I gathered history from textbooks, usually as a list of boring “facts” that had to be memorized for a test. I learned about current events from television and radio news programs or newspapers and news magazines, often as short snippets about happenings far removed from my personal space. I did not read historical nonfiction, which I perceived to be tedious beyond imagination. I ignored the value of historical lessons that could be gleaned from theater, movies, fiction, and art, enjoying the music or picture or story without bothering to dive into the times and places they portrayed. Intent to Use Preexposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), HIV Risk Behaviors, and Self-Report Neurocognitive Symptoms by High-Risk Drug Users: A Mediation Analysis
Neurocognitive impairment (NCI) and HIV risk are significant correlates of intent to use preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP). The extent to which similar outcomes could occur when these factors operate together, particularly for people who use drugs (PWUD), remains an important unanswered question. We therefore sought evidence that HIV risk behavior mediated the relationship between NCI and intent to use PrEP in high-risk PWUD in treatment. HIV-uninfected, methadone-maintained people who reported HIV-risk behaviors were enrolled (n  = 400). (Source: Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care)

Building a Conceptual Framework to Study the Effect of HIV Stigma-Reduction Intervention Strategies on HIV Test Uptake: A  Scoping Review
A scoping review of grey and peer-reviewed literature was conducted to develop a conceptual framework to illustrate mechanisms involved in reducing HIV stigma and increasing HIV test uptake. We followed a three-step approach to exploring the literature: developing concepts, organizing and categorizing concepts, and synthesizing concepts into a framework. The framework contains four types of intervention strategies: awareness creation, influencing normative behavior, providing support, and developing regulatory laws. The Experience of Pregnancy in Women Living with HIV: A Meta-synthesis of Qualitative Evidence
The lived experience of pregnancy from the perspectives of women living with HIV (WLWH) is not well understood. We aimed to understand the meaning of pregnancy for WLWH. A meta-synthesis was conducted to review and integrate qualitative studies about the phenomena; 12 databases were used to perform the search in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. Articles using qualitative methods published in peer-reviewed journals were included. Data were analyzed following guidance from Noblit and Hare (1988).
