Modulation of NADPH oxidase and Nrf2/HO ‐1 pathway by vanillin in cisplatin‐induced nephrotoxicity in rats
ConclusionsThe antioxidant mechanism by which vanillin protected against CP ‐induced nephrotoxicity involved the inhibition ofNOX ‐4 along with the stimulation of Nrf2/HO ‐1 signalling pathway. These in turn inhibited inflammation and apoptosis. (Source: Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology)

e5NT inhibitor protects acute restraint stress ‐induced depression by regulating nucleoside release in mice
ConclusionsThese data suggest that acute restraint stress may alter extracellular adenosine and uridine levels content in the hippocampus of mice via e5NT, and thus, the inhibition of e5NT may improve the anxiety behaviour in mice. Therefore, e5NT may therefore be a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of anxiety in mice. (Source: Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology)

Xanthone ‐enriched fraction of Garcinia mangostana and α‐mangostin improve the spatial learning and memory of chronic cerebral hypoperfusion rats
ConclusionsHowever, α‐MG (50 mg/kg) and XEFGM (100 mg/kg) reversed the cognitive impairment induced by CCH in MWM test. α‐MG (50 mg/kg) was further tested upon sub‐acute 14‐day treatment in CCH rats. Cognitive improvement was shown in MWM test but not in long‐term potentiation (LTP). BDNF but not CaMKII was found to be down‐regulated in CCH rats; however, both parameters were not affected by α‐MG. In conclusion, α‐MG ameliorated learning and memory deficits in both acute and sub‐acute treatments in CCH rats by improving the spatial learning but not hippocampal LTP. Hence, α‐MG may be a promising...

Pharmacological postconditioning: a molecular aspect in ischemic injury
AbstractObjectiveIschaemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury is defined as the damage to the tissue which is caused when blood supply returns to tissue after ischaemia. To protect the ischaemic tissue from irreversible injury, various protective agents have been studied but the benefits have not been clinically applicable due to monotargeting, low potency, late delivery or poor tolerability.Key FindingsStrategies involving preconditioning or postconditioning can address the issues related to the failure of protective therapies. In principle, postconditioning (PoCo) is clinically more applicable in the conditions in which there is u...

Cytotoxic activity of dimeric acridone alkaloids derived from Citrus plants towards human leukaemia HL ‐60 cells
ConclusionsCitbismine ‐E is a powerful cytotoxic agent against HL‐60 cells that acts by inducing mitochondrial dysfunction‐mediated apoptosis through ROS‐dependent JNK activation. Citbismine‐E also induced oxidative stress damage via ROS‐mediated lipid peroxidation and DNA damage in HL‐60 cells. (Source: Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology)

Benzothiazoles as potential antiviral agents
AbstractObjectivesThe recent viral pandemic poses a unique challenge for healthcare providers. Despite the remarkable progress, the number of novel antiviral agents in the pipeline is woefully inadequate against the evolving virulence and drug resistance of current viruses. This highlights the urgent need for new and improved vaccines, diagnostics and therapeutic agents to obviate the viral pandemic.Key findingsBenzothiazole plays a pivotal role in the design and development of antiviral drugs. This is evident from the fact that it comprises many clinically useful agents. The current review is aimed to provide an insight i...
