Extraction of a tooth with apical periodontitis in an adult with cherubism
We present the case of an adult patient with cherubism, who underwent dental extraction due to chronic apical periodontitis, at a bony site that was involved with a lesion in the affected jaw. A 19-year-old woman with cherubism, exhibiting severe bilateral expansion of the lower jaw, had a decayed second molar present in a lesion of her affected mandible. Although she had reached adulthood, it was unclear if active growth of the lesion had been arrested. On removal, the tooth showed osseous ankyloses and required root separation. Postoperative healing was normal and without complications, such as wound infection and regrow...

Trismus caused by scarring from refractory major recurrent aphthous stomatitis
Publication date: Available online 26 November 2019Source: Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Medicine, and PathologyAuthor(s): Yukio Watabe, Yusuke Matsuzaki, Shiro ShigematsuAbstractTrismus can have intra- and extra-articular causes. Extra-articular trismus can be caused by head and neck cancers and associated treatments, oral submucous fibrous, odontogenic infection, trauma and so on. However, scar contracture due to major recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) has not been reported previously as a cause of trismus. We performed Z-plasty for surgical treatment of severe trismus caused by acquired scar contracture f...

Two cases of odontogenic carcinoma with sclerosing features in the mandible: Diagnostic difficulties in a sclerosing odontogenic carcinoma
We report two cases of peculiar odontogenic carcinoma consisting of various features including SOC, clear cell odontogenic carcinoma (CCOC), ameloblastic carcinoma (AC), odontogenic fibroma (OF), and fibrous dysplasia-like osteosclerosis. Both cases showed no rearrangements of EWSR1 in break-apart fluorescence in situ hybridization and no V600E mutation of BRAF. We diagnosed both tumors as SOC. SOC may be a distinct odontogenic lesion that has various histological characteristics other than sclerosing features. (Source: Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Medicine, and Pathology)

Quality of life assessments in maxillofacial trauma patients – A systematic review
ConclusionsThere is a lack of consistency in the questionnaires used for analysis of quality of life and a validated questionnaire should be created to address this issue. More studies using comparable groups and quality of life among different cultures can be considered for further research. (Source: Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Medicine, and Pathology)

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2B: Maxillofacial finding in one case
We describe a case of A 18 year old male diagnosed as MEN 2B due to multiple oral lesions of the tongue and the lips. The presenting feature was a nodular fibrous lesion at a central diastema. Histopathological and Immunohistochemical examination revealed multiple mucosal neuroma. The case report highlights the importance of oral lesions in early detection of such life threatening conditions. (Source: Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Medicine, and Pathology)

Metastasis of malignant pleural mesothelioma to maxillary gingiva: A case report and literature review
Publication date: Available online 20 November 2019Source: Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Medicine, and PathologyAuthor(s): Takuya Tanaka, Koji Nakamatsu, Takahisa ImamuraAbstractOral cavity metastasis of malignancies is infrequent and that of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is extremely rare. A 66-year-old man was referred to our hospital complaining of a growing tumor at the left buccal gingiva of the maxilla (L12). The tumor was 15 mm diameter, accompanying a diffuse absorption of the maxillary alveolar bone. The tumor consisted of atypical epithelioid cells forming trabecular or alveolar structure. T...

A case of mediastinal emphysema caused by root canal treatment using Er: YAG laser
We report a case of cervicofacial, subcutaneous, and mediastinal emphysema caused by dental laser treatment. The patient consulted our hospital complaining of swelling and pain across his both sides of the forehead, around the eye lid, from left cheek to the neck. On computed tomography, low absorption images indicative of air infiltration were found scattered from the forehead and left side of the face to the left side of the neck. We admitted the patient to monitor his airway, for bed rest, and to initiate prophylactic intravenous antibiotic therapy. Consequently, 6 days after the dental laser treatment, the patient’s ...

Inferior-based Nasolabial Flap for the Surgical Treatment of Stage 3 Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Maxilla: A Technical Note
Publication date: Available online 19 November 2019Source: Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Medicine, and PathologyAuthor(s): Yoshinori Fujita, Yoshinari Myoken, Tetsuji OkamotoAbstractStage 3 medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) requires surgical treatment for resolution of the pathology. In the maxilla, removal of the necrotic bone and infected soft tissue leads to large defects with oroantral communications. It is essential to cover the exposed bone and close the communications by using well-vascularized soft tissue for good long-term results without a relapse of the osteonecrosis. Here, we eval...
