JEPM April 2017 —Abstracts
Intensity modulated radiotherapy, stereotactic body radiotherapy, image-guided radiotherapy, and volumetric modulated arc radiotherapy are all advanced treatment modalities that can potentially deliver escalating doses of radiotherapy to tumors while sparing essentially normal neighboring tissue and anatomic structures, thus minimizing both acute and long-term adverse effects. In addition, adaptive planning takes into account the change in tumor volume after treatment to reduce collateral damage to critical nearby tissue during future radiotherapy treatments. Anesthetic induction and maintenance can be performed with a variety of drug combinations through various routes of administration. Sedation and anesthesia are commonly required to perform even the most simple and brief procedures on companion exotic pet animals. These species are predisposed to stress, are often difficult to restrain, and have unique physiologic properties that are not fully understood. For these reasons, it is important to explore novel therapeutic drugs and methods of administration in order to optimize their efficacy. (Source: Journal of Exotic Pet Medicine)

Surgical management of colonic adenocarcinoma in a rat (rattus norvegicus)
A 9-month-old female Dumbo rat (Rattus norvegicus) was evaluated for a 24-hour history of obstipation. A general physical exam revealed a large irregular abdominal mass, extending caudally from mid abdomen to the pelvis. The mass had a firm central region with a compressible periphery. Radiographic imaging confirmed severe intestinal distention, but failed to delineate a discrete mass. Following 3 days of unsuccessful medical therapy for possible colonic impaction, surgical intervention was elected. (Source: Journal of Exotic Pet Medicine)

JEPM January 2017 —Abstracts
The physical properties of dexmedetomidine (DEX, a selective α-2 agonist), midazolam (MID, a tranquilizer), and butorphanol (BUT, an agonist-antagonist opioid analgesic), make these pharmacologic compounds amenable to transmucosal absorption. Transmucosal delivery of DEX, MID, and BUT has been used in humans and some animal species. The goal of this cross-se ctional study was to evaluate the sedative and cardiorespiratory effects of the DEX/MID/BUT (DMB) combination in 8 healthy female intact New Zealand white rabbits (mean age 12 months ± 1 month). Literature Review
This text is masterly edited by Brain L. Speer, DVM, Dip. ABVP (Avian), Dip. ECZM (Avian), with more than 87 contributors from around the world, divided in 4 sections with a total of 25 chapters, more than 800 full color images, 3 appendices, and more than 900 pages. The foreword, from Dr. James M. Harris, gives a brief but meaningful personal historical perspective of the progression of the field of avian medicine and surgery since Robert Stroud ׳s book was first published. The foreword also reveals to this reviewer, but probably well known by many, an early mentorship link with the editor of this book. (Source: Journal ...
