Single port laparoscopic-assisted ovariohysterectomy in three rabbits
Single incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) involves only a single 2 –3cm incision in the ventral midline of the patient with entry of the port, particularly the foam SILSTM Port multiple access port. This type of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) surgery with use of only one port and a controlled Hasson approach provides decreased risk of iatrogenic abdominal visce ra penetration. This SILSTM Port (Covidien, Medtronic, Minneapolis, MN) also allows easy transition of instruments, telescope, and bipolar electrocautery devices amongst the 3 built-in cannulae for ideal triangulation for each side of the patient. Maropitant
(Cerenia) is a highly specific neurokinin-1 receptor (NK-1R) antagonist that has been developed as a general anti-emetic for canine and feline use. Currently, research investigations involving cats and dogs suggest that maropitant may be beneficial as an analgesic in a multi-modal analgesia protocol and/or as a pre-anesthetic medication. At this time the use of maropitant, has shown no significant effect on resting blood pressure, respiration rate and depth during general anesthesia,1 while reducing the MAC of sevoflurane by 16% when administered IV in dogs2 and prevents vomiting induced by morphine3 or dexmedetomidine. Placentitis and dystocia attributed to streptobacillus moniliformis in a domestic dumbo rat (rattus norvegicus)
A 12-week-old sexually intact female domestic Dumbo rat (Rattus norvegicus) was presented for dystocia. The animal had maloccluded incisors, muco-hemorrhagic vulvar discharge, and no evidence of obstruction of the pelvic canal. The animal was treated parenterally with calcium and oxytocin and provided supportive care. Controlled vaginal delivery under general anesthesia was unsuccessful. The animal was humanely euthanized and was diagnosed with bacterial placentitis on necropsy. Histopathologic examination revealed abundant filamentous, Gram-negative, Giemsa-positive bacteria associated with the placenta, endometrial surfa...

Detection of enrofloxacin after single-dose percutaneous administration in python regius, boa constrictor imperator, and acrantophis dumerili
In this study, the blood concentration of enrofloxacin administered transdermally to three different reptilian species, Python regius, Acrantophis dumerili, and Boa constrictor imperator at 50mg/kg was determined. The formulation used was a transdermal commercial vehicle, Pentravan ® cream, a hydrophilic base emulsion that uses the liposomal technique to penetrate the skin. The enrofloxacin was incorporated at 5wt % in the Pentravan® cream, and the plasma level of enrofloxacin and its metabolite ciprofloxacin were measured using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Immers ıon Anesthesia with Alfaxalone in a Goldfısh (Carassius auratus)
An alfaxalone anesthesia protocol was used to perform a coeliotomy in a goldfish diagnosed with multiple ovarian cysts. The 7-year-old, 460g, female goldfish presented for severe coelomic distension and anorexia. Full-body radiographic images were unremarkable, but coelomic ultrasound revealed multiple ovarian cysts. Ultrasound-guided aspiration of a large cyst was performed. Cytology revealed lysed leukocytes that contained numerous intracellular bacilli suggestive of septic suppurative inflammation. Parathyroid hormone, ionized calcium, and 25-hydroxyvitamin d concentrations in the domestic ferret (mustela putorius furo)
The objective of this study was to measure parathyroid hormone (PTH), ionized calcium, and 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations in healthy intact adult ferrets. Serum was collected from 16 clinically healthy adult ferrets (eight male and eight female). Concentrations of PTH and 25-hydroxyvitamin D were measured via commercially available radioimmunoassays validated for humans, dogs, and cats (PTH) plus horses (25-hydroxyvitamin D). Concentrations of ionized calcium (at pH 7.4) were measured using an ion-specific electrode. (Source: Journal of Exotic Pet Medicine)

Microsporidial keratoconjunctivitis in a pet bearded dragon (pogona vitticeps)
A four-month-old female bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) was presented with unilateral conjunctivitis. The conjunctivitis was not responsive to topical antibiotic or anti-inflammatory therapy and continued to progress in severity. Conjunctival tissue was sampled and microsporidial conjunctivitis was diagnosed on histopathological evaluation of submitted samples. Medical therapy was initiated and included topical itraconazole, systemic itraconazole, and systemic fenbendazole. Serial serum chemistry panels and complete blood counts were monitored for potential side effects of medications administered. (Source: Journal of Exotic Pet Medicine)

Diagnostic challenge
A 30-week-old, female, 35-gram mock chocolate mouse (Mus musculus) (case 1) and a 35-week-old, female, 35-gram light mock chocolate mouse (Mus musculus) (case 2), were referred to the Praxis Veterinary Clinic with a 4-week history of ulcerative lesions and severe pruritus, which appeared to have begun after a bedding change. Both mice were housed with eight other female fancy mice, all of which appeared clinically healthy, in a large purposely built wooden enclosure. The owner reported obsessive scratching, especially in case 2, and no improvement of the lesions following administration of enrofloxacin in drinking water, t...

Nephrectomy in a case of infectious nephritis in a mexican kingsnake (lampropeltis getula nigrita)
A 10-year-old, intact, captive-born female Mexican Black Kingsnake (Lampropeltis getula nigrita) was presented with a 1-week history of caudal coelomic distention. On physical examination a 5cm in length, soft non-mobile mass was identified in the caudal third of the coelomic cavity, 4cm cranially to the cloaca. Survey radiographic images revealed an increased soft tissue opacity within the affected area with variable sized, irregular mineralized structures. An intracloacal contrast study showed contrast retention in the cloaca. (Source: Journal of Exotic Pet Medicine)

Treatment of a facial myxoma in a goldfish (carassius auratus) with intralesional bleomycin chemotherapy and radiation therapy
A 4.5-year-old Ranchu goldfish (Carassius auratus) was presented for evaluation of a slowly growing facial mass of six months ′ duration. The mass, identified histologically as a myxoma, was noted to be protruding into the oral cavity and causing exophthalmia of the left eye. Two intralesional chemotherapeutic treatments of 2.5 U/kg bleomycin were performed 14 weeks apart. Reported side effects consisted of mild lethargy noted for two days following the second administration. Four weeks following the initial bleomycin administration, the owner appreciated a reduction in tumor size of 60%, however tumor expansion was occu...
