Risk factors of post ‐ERCP pancreatitis in biliary type Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction in Japanese patients
CONCLUSIONSPGW technique and EST for biliary type SOD were important risk factors for PEP. Pancreatic stenting was ineffective for prevention of PEP. When PGW technique or EST for biliary type SOD is unavoidable, we should use any preventive measure including NSAIDs in addition to pancreatic stenting. (Source: Journal of Digestive Diseases)

Potential roles of neutrophils in regulating intestinal mucosal inflammation of inflammatory bowel disease
ABSTRACT Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), comprising of ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, are inflammatory disorders of the gastrointestinal tract characterized by chronically relapsing mucosal inflammation. Neutrophils, as the effector cells of acute inflammation, have long been reported to play a role in the maintenance of intestinal homeostasis and pathogenesis of IBD. At the early stage of mucosal inflammation in patients with IBD, neutrophils flood into intestinal mucosa, phagocytose pathogenic microbes, and promote mucosal healing and resolution of inflammation. However, large numbers of neutrophils infiltrat...

Do patients with iron deficiency without anemia benefit from an endoscopic examination?
CONCLUSIONSThe prevalence of gastrointestinal lesions in patients with and without anemia was similar but malignancy was eight times less frequent in the ID group. Systematic endoscopic evaluation in patients with ID is therefore questionable. (Source: Journal of Digestive Diseases)

Can clinical factors predict the need for intervention after a positive intraoperative cholangiogram?
CONCLUSIONSElevated transaminases and sonographic biliary dilation have poor predictive values for choledocholithiasis. Thus, patients with a positive intraoperative cholangiogram may benefit from additional studies, such as endoscopic ultrasound or magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography prior to ERCP. Hepatic Subcapsular Hematoma Breaking into the Abdominal Cavity after Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy for Pancreatic Stones
Abstract Pancreatic extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (P‐ESWL) has been recommended for the management of large pancreatic stones. It is considered to be a noninvasive and low morbidity procedure. However, despite its minimal invasiveness, it does have complications. (Source: Journal of Digestive Diseases)

Heat ‐Induced Inflammation and Its Role in Esophageal Cancer
Abstract Esophageal cancer as the sixth common cause of cancer death in the world consists of different histological types with various incidence patterns. Among them, esophageal adenocarcinoma and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma are the most prevalent types which also have different causality, cell of origin and risk factors. Since epidemiological studies have announced consumption of hot substances as one of the major risk factors for squamous cell carcinoma, evaluating the effect of this external stress on esophagus cells seems desirable. This specific kind of stress impose cellular changes and stabilize them through...
