Glutathione S ‐transferase genes and the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus: Role of sexual dimorphism, gene–gene and gene–smoking interactions in disease susceptibility
ConclusionsThis study demonstrates, for the first time, that genes encoding glutathione S‐transferases jointly contribute to the risk of T2DM, and that their effects on disease susceptibility are gender specific. (Source: Journal of Diabetes)

Identification of stress ‐related microRNA biomarkers in type 2 diabetes: a systematic review and meta‐analysis
ConclusionsIn meta‐analysis, 16 stress‐related miRNAs were significantly dysregulated in T2DM. MiR‐148b, miR‐223, miR‐130a, miR‐19a, miR‐26b and miR‐27b were selected as potential circulating biomarkers. In addition, miR‐146a and miR‐21 were identified as potential tissue biomarkers of T2DM. Utility of three novel insulin resistance ‐related lipid indexes for predicting type 2 diabetes mellitus among people with normal fasting glucose in rural China
ConclusionsTyG, VAI, and LAP did not improve the T2DM prediction as compared with FPG or WC alone. Therefore, they may not be inexpensive tools for predicting T2DM in rural Chinese people. (Source: Journal of Diabetes)

Efficacy of automatic bolus calculator with automatic speech recognition in patients with type 1 diabetes: a randomized crossover trial
ConclusionThe VoiceDiab system improves postprandial glucose control without increasing the time of hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia. Therefore it may be useful in the treatment of patients with diabetes on intensive insulin therapy. (Source: Journal of Diabetes)

Hemoglobin A1c and diagnosis of diabetes
Abstract The prevalence of diabetes is increasing dramatically throughout the world, especially in China. Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is an indicator of mean blood glucose concentrations and plays an important role in the assessment of glucose control and cardiovascular risk. In 2010 the American Diabetes Association (ADA) included HbA1c ≥6.5% into the revised criteria for the diagnosis of diabetes. However, the debate on whether HbA1c should be used to diagnose diabetes is far from being settled and there are still unanswered questions regarding the cutoff value of HbA1c for diabetes diagnosis in different populations and et...

Long ‐term outcomes of patients with type 2 diabetes attending a multidisciplinary diabetes kidney disease clinic
ConclusionsMultidisciplinary endocrinology and nephrology care in the DKD clinic is associated with a lower risk of end‐stage renal disease. These findings may inform future management strategies targeted at patients with T2DM and CKD, especially with regard to joint specialist management involving endocrinologists and nephrologists. Performance of non ‐traditional hyperglycemia biomarkers by chronic kidney disease status in older adults with diabetes: Results from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study
ConclusionsIn older adults with severe or very severe CKD, HbA1c, glycated albumin, and fructosamine were not highly correlated with fasting glucose. The results suggest there may be no particular advantage of glycated albumin or fructosamine over HbA1c for monitoring glycemic control in CKD. (Source: Journal of Diabetes)
