Secular changes in the symptom level of clinically diagnosed autism
ConclusionsOver time, considerably fewer autism symptoms seemed to be required for a clinical diagnosis of autism, at least for those diagnosed after the preschool years. The findings add support for the notion that the observed increase in autism diagnoses is, at least partly, the by‐product of changes in clinical practice, and flag up the need for working in agreement with best practice guidelines. Poor family functioning mediates the link between childhood adversity and adolescent nonsuicidal self ‐injury
ConclusionsThe findings support the cumulative suboptimal environmental hazards (proximal family relationships as a mediator) hypothesis. Improving the family environment at age 14 may mitigate the effects of CFA on adolescent onset of NSSI. (Source: Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry)

Reduced orienting to audiovisual synchrony in infancy predicts autism diagnosis at 3  years of age
ConclusionsThis study suggests that reduced orienting to audiovisual synchrony within biological motion is an early sign of autism. The findings support the view that poor multisensory processing could be an important antecedent marker of this neurodevelopmental condition. (Source: Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry)

Promises and pitfalls in the development of biomarkers that can promote early intervention in children at risk
The cost to individuals and to society of psychopathology that emerges in childhood is substantial. Children whose problems are undiagnosed or inadequately treated struggle in school, experience rejection by peers, and become a source of stress for caregivers and teachers. As adults, their mental health problems tend to recur and their cognitive difficulties persist. Clinicians hold a well‐founded belief that early identification of children who are at risk for psychopathology is the key to prevention. (Source: Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry)
