Chemical safety education for the 21st century — Fostering safety information competency in chemists
Publication date: May–June 2018Source: Journal of Chemical Health and Safety, Volume 25, Issue 3Author(s): Samuella SigmannDuring the education process, each person strives to acquire the necessary skill set or set of competencies needed to be successful in their selected career. For example, a job listing for a bench chemist might state that the successful applicant should have a BS in chemistry, (knowledge), be familiar with common laboratory operations (skills), and be a contributing member of a team (attitude). It is our job as curriculum designers and educators to give our students the competencies they will need to...

ACS’s Hazard Assessment in Research Laboratories website: An important safety culture tool
This article describes how it was used in a mechanochemistry research lab from the perspective of a graduate student. It proved to be very helpful when identifying hazards, assessing risk, and selecting appropriate control measures for the various operations conducted in academic research laboratories. Connections to a green chemistry metric, the EcoScale, are described as well. (Source: Journal of Chemical Health and Safety)

Collecting reaction incident information: Engaging the community in sharing safety learnings
Publication date: May–June 2018Source: Journal of Chemical Health and Safety, Volume 25, Issue 3Author(s): Carmen I. Nitsche, Gabrielle Whittick, Mark ManfrediEvery day unexpected incidents happen in the laboratory and each such incident provides experience that supports the learning process. The basic premise of the Chemical Safety Library (CSL) project, undertaken by the Pistoia Alliance, is that these learnings should be shared with the wider community so that everyone who works in a lab has an opportunity to learn from those unexpected reaction outcomes. In this paper, we will discuss the importance of community shar...

Safety culture and safety compliance in academic laboratories: A Canadian perspective
Publication date: Available online 24 May 2018Source: Journal of Chemical Health and SafetyAuthor(s): Helene-Rosina Ayi, Chun-Yip HonLaboratories are inherently dangerous work environments. In fact, there have been a number of incidents, including fatalities, reported from academic laboratories situated in the United States and worldwide. In many instances, a lack of safety compliance and poor safety culture have been attributed to causing these laboratory accidents. Oddly, no major incident has apparently been reported from an academic lab based in Canada. Therefore, the goal of this pilot study was to examine the safety ...

Incomplete understanding of biogas chemical hazards — Serious gas poisoning accident while unloading food waste at biogas plant
Publication date: Available online 25 May 2018Source: Journal of Chemical Health and SafetyAuthor(s): Frank Huess Hedlund, Michael MadsenAt a biogas plant, a truck driver was overcome by toxic fumes while unloading food waste slurry collected at sites that operate a shredder and tank system. Trucks unload their cargo into a feedstock pit. While unloading, hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide and possibly other toxic gases were released. Ventilation systems were overwhelmed. The driver narrowly escaped death. Several would-be rescuers collapsed. Under marginally different conditions, this accident could have led to five fatalit...

Expedient destruction of organic peroxides including triacetone triperoxide (TATP) in emergency situations
Publication date: Available online 20 June 2018Source: Journal of Chemical Health and SafetyAuthor(s): Damien Reid, Bruce Riches, Andrew Rowan, Michael LoganThe destruction of organic peroxides particularly triacetone triperoxide (TATP) in emergency situations poses many challenges to emergency responders because of their inherent hazards and sensitivity to detonation. Incidents involving TATP have become more common in recent years as it has found widespread use as an explosive material in terrorism related incidents.A new field portable approach using high temperature combustion has been developed and tested to destroy o...
