Performance of a Temperature-controlled Shape-memory Pupil Expander for Cataract Surgery
We developed an optimized novel pupil expander device that addresses the shortcomings of existing devices, and compared it with several commercially available devices to show the benefits of our design. (Source: Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery)

Severe corneal melting following cataract surgery in patients prescribed topical post-operative NSAIDs and a dexamethasone/neomycin combination therapy
Three patients using a post-operative combination of topical Acular ® (ketorolac) and Maxitrol® (dexamethasone and neomycin) were diagnosed with atypical keratopathy soon after routine cataract surgery. An immediate retrospective analysis of patients, who had used this topical drug combination within the hospital in the previous year, identified 10 further patient s who also had significant corneal pathology following uncomplicated cataract surgery. Five of the 13 affected patients had corneal melting and one of these patients suffered corneal perforation and endophthalmitis. (Source: Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery)

Repeatability and reproducibility of corneal deformation response parameters by dynamic ultra-high speed Scheimpflug imaging in keratoconus
To assess the repeatability and reproducibility of corneal dynamic response parameters (DCRs) obtained by ultra-high speed Scheimpflug imaging Corvis ST (Oculus, Wetzlar, Germany) in keratoconic (KC) patients. (Source: Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery)

The association between cataract and cotinine-verified smoking status in 11,435 Korean adults using Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data from 2008 to 2016
Cataract is the most common cause of blindness worldwide. We investigated the association between cataract and cotinine-verified smoking status, which includes “hidden” smokers. (Source: Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery)

A prospective three-armed study on pain and epithelial healing after corneal crosslinking
Patients experience considerable pain after epithelium-off crosslinking. Three post-operative regimes (bandage lens, occlusive patch or antibiotic ointment) showed equal pain scores. Wound healing appeared slightly quicker after occlusive patching. (Source: Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery)

Complications of cosmetic iris implants: a French series of 87 eyes
Some ophthalmologists use iris implants for cosmetics purposes, but complications are frequent. In our series 92.3% of eyes had at least one complication. More than 80% need an explantation. (Source: Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery)

A prospective comparison of outcome between SMILE and Femtosecond LASIK in eyes having refractive error greater than -10-Diopters
Compared with LASIK, SMILE offers superior safety and objective visual quality, comparable stability and efficacy, and a little inferior predictability, in correcting maximum myopic meridian exceeding 10 D. (Source: Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery)

The effect of low predicted/calculated postoperative keratometry on corrected distance visual acuity after LASIK
To compare refractive outcomes of eyes with flat keratometry (K) to matched controls after myopic laser in  situ keratomileusis (LASIK). (Source: Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery)

Epithelial ingrowth after late traumatic femtosecond laser –assisted laser in situ keratomileusis flap dislocation
We present a case of epithelial ingrowth after late traumatic femtosecond-assisted LASIK flap dislocation. A 2 5-year-old woman presented to our emergency department after being scratched in the right eye by her cat. The patient had bilateral myopic femtosecond-assisted LASIK surgery 5 years previously with good postoperative visual acuity. (Source: Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery)

Face-to-face phacoemulsification using a slitlamp in patients who are unable to lie flat
We describe a new technique that we have used on 4 eyes of two patients. Both were operated on while sitting in a strictly upright position, resting their chin in front of a mobile slitlamp  in the same manner as during a standard ophthalmologic examination. The surgeon sits on the other side of the slitlamp, facing the patient, and operates via a temporal corneal incision. (Source: Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery)
