The immune landscape of chondrosarcoma - potential for therapeutic targeting of CSFR1+ macrophages
Publication date: February 2020Source: Journal of Bone Oncology, Volume 20Author(s): Iseulys Richert, Anne Gomez-Brouchet, Corinne Bouvier, Gonzague Du Bouexic De Pinieux, Marie Karanian, Jean-Yves Blay, Aurélie DutourAbstractSurvival rate for Chondrosarcoma (CHS) is at a standstill, more effective treatments are urgently needed. Consequently, a better understanding of CHS biology and its immune environment is crucial to identify new prognostic factors and therapeutic targets. Here, we exhaustively describe the immune landscape of conventional and dedifferentiated CHS. Using IHC and molecular analyses (RT-qPCR), we mapped ...

Bone metastases in thyroid cancer
Publication date: Available online 19 February 2020Source: Journal of Bone OncologyAuthor(s): Nicole M. Iñiguez-Ariza, Keith C. Bible, Bart L. ClarkeAbstractWhereas preemptive screening for the presence of lymph node and lung metastases is standard-of-care in thyroid cancer patients, bone metastases are less well studied and are often neglected in thyroid cancer patient surveillance. Bone metastases in thyroid cancer are, however, independently associated with poor/worse prognosis with a median overall survival from detection of only 4 years despite an otherwise excellent prognosis for the vast majority of thyroid cancer ...

Long noncoding RNA OR3A4 promotes the proliferation and invasion of osteosarcoma cells by sponging miR-1227-5p
ConclusionOR3A4 promotes osteosarcoma cell proliferation and invasion by sponging miR-1227-5p, which might be related to the metastasis of osteosarcoma and could be used as a potential prognostic biomarker and therapeutic target in osteosarcoma. (Source: Journal of Bone Oncology)

Prognostic factors in osteosarcoma: A study level meta-analysis and systematic review of current practice
ConclusionThe meta-analysis demonstrated that male patients, older age, large tumor size, non-extremity osteosarcoma, proximal osteosarcoma, poor chemotherapy response, no surgical treatment, and amputation surgery were correlated with a poor prognosis in osteosarcoma patients. Exosomes derived from bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells promote osteosarcoma development by activating oncogenic autophagy
Publication date: Available online 4 February 2020Source: Journal of Bone OncologyAuthor(s): Yao Huang, Wei Liu, Bing He, Lei Wang, Fucheng Zhang, Hao Shu, Luning SunAbstractOsteosarcoma (OS) is a malignant bone tumor that frequently occurs in adolescents. It has a high rate of pulmonary metastasis and mortality. Previous studies have demonstrated that human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs) can promote the malignant progression in various tumors, including OS. Also, it is recognized that exosomes derived from hBMSCs (hBMSC-Exos) mediate cell-to-cell communication and exhibit similar effects on the development of...

Rapid detection of EGFR mutations in decalcified lung cancer bone metastasis
Publication date: Available online 10 January 2020Source: Journal of Bone OncologyAuthor(s): Antoine Boureille, Carole Ferraro-Peyret, Guillaume Pontarollo, Cyrille Confavreux, Jean-Baptiste Pialat, Sylvie Isaac, Fabien Forest, Violaine Yvorel, Emanuel Watkin, Nicolas Girard, Marie BrevetABSTRACTDetection of molecular alterations in lung cancer bone metastasis (LCBM) is particularly difficult when decalcification procedure is needed. The Idylla™ real-time (RT)-PCR is compared to the routine method used in our laboratory, which combines next generation and Sanger sequencing, for the detection of EGFR mutations in LCBM.LCB...

Total vertebral involvement by benign fibrous histiocytoma: A case report and literature review
ConclusionsTo our knowledge, this is the first case of total vertebral BFH. Spinal BFH is a considered a non-aggressive benign lesion. Surgical intervention is usually sufficient for managing BFH with both recurrence and metastasis uncommon. (Source: Journal of Bone Oncology)

Bone decalcification to assess programmed cell death ligand 1 expression in bone metastases of non-small cell lung cancers
Publication date: Available online 8 January 2020Source: Journal of Bone OncologyAuthor(s): Guillaume Pontarollo, Cyrille B. Confavreux, Jean-Baptiste Pialat, Sylvie Isaac, Fabien Forest, Violaine Yvorel, Jean-Michel Maury, Nicolas Girard, Marie BrevetAbstractAs for molecular alterations of lung adenocarcinoma, it is critical that pathologists are able to give PD-L1 expression status before first-line of treatment. The present study compared PD-L1 expression (clone 22-C3) in decalcified using EDTA or formic acid and non-decalcified lung cancer metastases bone samples. Among the 84 bone samples analysed for PD-L1 expression...

The First Total Vertebral Involvement of Benign Fibrous Histiocytoma: A Case Report and Literature Review
ConclusionsThis is the first total vertebral BFH up to now. Spinal BFH occupies rather low aggressiveness. With rather limited recurrence and malignant degeneration, surgical interventions seem enough for its management. (Source: Journal of Bone Oncology)

Patterns of care for patients with metastatic bone disease in solid tumors: A cross-sectional study from Switzerland (SAKK 95/16)
ConclusionsThis cross-sectional, non-interventional study, found high implementation of guideline-recommended BTA prescribing, good pain control and low incidence of skeletal related events. Long-term BTA randomized controlled trials have the potential to further optimize routine care outcomes for patients. (Source: Journal of Bone Oncology)

Primary desmoplastic small round cell tumor of the tibia: PET/CT and MRI presentation of a rare case and review of the literature
In this study, we reported a new case of primary DSRCT of the tibia in a 33-year-old man who had intermittent pain in the left tibia. Radiographs showed transparent lesions in the left upper tibial. MRI revealed a lobular, lytic and ill-identified lesion with adjacent soft tissues swelling of the upper left tibia. CT confirmed notable destruction and wormlike osteolysis of the bone cortex. PET/CT showed a mass of high uptakes, indicating the malignance. He accepted surgical resection with followed multi-agent chemotherapy, containing vincristine, doxorubicin, ifosfamide and etoposide. Clinically and radiologically, the pat...
