Surgical treatment of cementoblastoma: case report
ABSTRACT Cementoblastoma is a benign, slow-growing, and unlimited mesenchymal dental tumor. Due to its rarity, we aimed to report the case of a 24-year-old female patient who presented pain complaints and increased volume in the left mandibular region. Imaging tests showed a hyperdense lesion with hypodense halo, associated with the roots of elements 35, 36, and 37. Histopathology revealed diagnosis of cementoblastoma. The proposed treatment consisted of the enucleation of the tumor mass together with the exodontia of the teeth involved and osteotomy of the bone remnant. The patient has been under follow-up for one year wi...

Basal cell carcinoma of the areola: a rare case report
ABSTRACT Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common malignant cutaneous neoplasm. It is preferentially located in areas exposed to solar radiation, since the cumulative effect of ultraviolet radiation on susceptible individuals seems to be the major triggering factor. Among the places considered unusual are breasts and glutes. According to a survey conducted in 2016, there are only 55 cases of BCC in the nipple-areola complex described in the literature. In the present report, we have a patient with areolar BCC and discuss the importance of a thorough dermatological examination.RESUMEN El carcinoma basocelular (CBC) es ...

Celiac disease as differential diagnosis of normocalcemic hyperparathyroidism
ABSTRACT There is no recommendation to investigate celiac disease (CD) in patients with elevated parathyroid hormone (PTH) and normal blood calcium if they are asymptomatic, especially if they do not have hypovitaminosis D. CD was diagnosed in a 30-year-old asymptomatic man without vitamin D deficiency, who had total calcium 9.2 mg/dl, 25-hydroxyvitamin D 36 ng/dl, PTH 112 pg/ml, total IgA 42 mg/dl, anti-tissue transglutaminase (tTG) IgA 22 U/ml. Duodenal biopsy by endoscopy confirmed CD. The patient started a gluten-free diet that was maintained. After six months, the patient had total calcium 9.5 mg/dl, 25-hydroxyvitamin...

TRH stimulation test in patients with repeatedly elevated TSH and normal FT4
ABSTRACT Subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) is defined by elevated thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) with normal free thyroxine (FT4). We aimed to evaluate the thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) stimulation test in patients with repeatedly elevated TSH (up to 10 mIU/l) and normal FT4, but without apparent thyroid disease. Women with TSH> 4.5 and ≤ 10 mIU/l (in two measurements) and normal FT4 were selected. Women with a known non-thyroid cause of TSH elevation, those treated with anti-thyroid drugs, amiodarone, lithium, and those with a history of thyroidectomy, neck radiotherapy and 131I treatment were excluded. Seve...

Evaluation of quality indicators of cervical cytopathology tests carried out in a municipality of Paraná, Brazil
Conclusion: In 2012 and 2013, the high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion/s atisfactory and the positivity index indicators were below the recommended parameters, and in the remaining years, these indicators were within the parameters recommended. Consequently, a greater number of truly cancer precursor lesions were identified, demonstrating the importance of internal quali ty control in the prevention of cervical cancer.RESUMEN Introducci ón: Aunque criterios y recomendaciones están bien definidos para la mejora de calidad de las pruebas citopatológicas en Brasil, los indicadores de calidad de varios laboratorios s...

COVID-19: clinical and laboratory manifestations in novel coronavirus infection
ABSTRACT COVID-19 is a highly contagious disease caused by the coronavirus of severe acute respiratory syndrome 2 (SARS-CoV-2). In 2020, due to the outbreak, it was considered by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a pandemic. The infection caused by the novel coronavirus has high mortality in a small portion of the infected population, especially in elderly, immunosuppressed, diabetic, cardiac, and hypertensive individuals. Many infected are asymptomatic (and may be carriers) or present mild or moderate flu-like symptoms. Deglutition manifestations in patients with oropharyngeal cancer subjected to conservative therapy: systematic review
Conclusion: The evidence from this systematic review suggests that conservative therapies cause deglutition changes or amplify the pre-existing ones, regardless of the type and magnitude of radiation, as well as tumor staging. However, there is little standardization in the research methodologies, making a meta-analysis study difficult to conduct.RESUMEN Objetivos: Caracterizar la producci ón científica e identificar las alteraciones de deglución en personas con cáncer de orofaringe sometidas a tratamiento conservador. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy revealed a polypoid mass with blackened areas at the greater curvature of the gastric body, which was histologically compatible with melanoma; positive immunohistochemistry for S100, melan-A, and vimentin. The extensive dermatological exam did not identify a primary lesion.RESUMEN El melanoma extracut áneo es una entidad clínica rara, y es difícil identificar su naturaleza primaria o secundaria.
