Impact of previous thoracsic radiation therapy on the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors in advanced non-smasll-cell lung cancer
ConclusionPrevious thoracic radiation therapy, but not prior extra-thoracic radiation therapy, enhanced the efficacy of anti-programmed cell death protein 1/programmed death-ligand 1 therapy in non-small-cell lung cancer patients. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

Uniform infection screening allowed safe head and neck surgery during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic in Japan
ConclusionOur data indicate that continuation of head and neck anticancer surgical treatment in an epidemic area during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic were safe and feasible, if adequate and strict preventive measures are vigorously and successfully carried out. Retrospective evaluation of risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy for BRCA1/2 pathogenic variant carriers among a cohort study in a single institution
ConclusionsWomen who paid for risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy out of pocket were older than the recommended age at which the procedure should be performed, and this may explain the higher rate of occult cancers than previously reported. We need to perform risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy at the recommended age to ensure that the procedure is effective for primary prevention. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

Prognosis and surgical outcome of soft tissue sarcoma with malignant fungating wounds
ConclusionsMalignant fungating wounds in soft tissue sarcoma were significantly associated with a poor prognosis; however, the incidence of surgical complications and local recurrence after limb-salvage surgery was comparable to that of general soft tissue sarcoma cases. Limb-salvage surgery should be considered, if possible, to preserve the patient ’s quality of life because of the dismal prognosis of patients with malignant fungating wound in soft tissue sarcoma. Adjuvant and neoadjuvant therapy for biliary tract cancer: a review of clinical trials
AbstractCancer originating in the biliary tract can be classified as bile duct cancer (cholangiocarcinoma), gallbladder cancer, or ampullary cancer. Bile duct cancer is further divided to intrahepatic, perihilar and distal bile duct subtypes according to the anatomical location of the tumor. The biological characteristics of each tumor are heterogeneous. However, because of the rarity of each disease, the efficacy of new drugs has been tested in groups of patients with different biliary tract cancers. In patients with metastatic or recurrent biliary tract cancer, recent randomized clinical trials revealed the non-inferiori...

Age-specific corpus uteri cancer incidence rate in the world
In order to make a comparison of the age-specific colorectal cancer incidence rate between Japan and other countries, we abstracted cancer incidence rate from the Cancer Incidence in Five Continents Vol. XI (CI5) (1). The International Agency for Research on Cancer provides the CI5 databases on the incidence of cancer recorded by cancer registries (regional and national) worldwide. We used cancer incidence rate in five countries in Asia (China, India, Japan, Republic of Korea and Thailand), three countries in America (the USA, Canada and Brazil), two countries in Oceania (Australia and New Zealand) and four countries in Eu...

Safety and pharmacokinetics of polatuzumab vedotin in Japanese patients with relapsed/refractory B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma: a phase 1 dose-escalation study
ConclusionsThis phase 1 dose-escalation study demonstrated that pola has an acceptable safety profile and offers encouraging antitumor activity to Japanese patients with relapsed/refractory B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Pola 1.8  mg/kg, the recommended phase 2 dose, was tolerable in Japanese patients. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

Five-year follow-up results from phase II studies of nivolumab in Japanese patients with previously treated advanced non-small cell lung cancer: pooled analysis of the ONO-4538-05 and ONO-4538-06 studies
ConclusionsLong-term survival with nivolumab was observed in patients with squamous or non-squamous non-small cell lung cancer. No new safety signals were reported after ≥5 years of follow-up. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

A multicenter non-randomized phase III study of sentinel node navigation surgery for early gastric cancer
AbstractThis prospective multicenter non-randomized phase III study aims to evaluate the long-term outcome of sentinel node navigation surgery for early gastric cancer compared with conventional distal or total gastrectomy. Clinically diagnosed primary T1N0M0 gastric cancer patients with a single lesion ( ≤40 mm) and without previous endoscopic treatment will be enrolled in this study. Sentinel nodes are identified by dye and radioisotope tracers and are subjected to intraoperative rapid pathology. For patients with negative sentinel node metastasis, individualized surgery consisting of limited st omach resection and se...

The current state of immunotherapy for primary and secondary brain tumors: similarities and differences
AbstractTreatment and resolution of primary and metastatic brain tumors have long presented a challenge to oncologists. In response to the dismal survival outcomes associated with conventional therapies, various immunotherapy modalities, such as checkpoint inhibitors, vaccine, cellular immunotherapy and viral immunotherapy have been actively explored over the past couple of decades. Although improved patient survival has been more frequently noted in treatment of brain metastases, little progress has been made in improving patient survival in cases of primary brain tumors, specifically glioblastoma, which is the representa...

Feasibility study of cryobiopsy for practical pathological diagnosis of primary lung cancer including immunohistochemical assessment
ConclusionsImmunohistochemical expression of certain tumor markers showed a high concordance between cryobiopsy and conventional scalpel sampling. Cryobiopsy is feasible for pathological diagnostics including PD-L1 evaluation. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)
