A national survey of nurse-led and delivered services within sexual health across the United Kingdom
This was a cross-sectional study using an online survey to evaluate the provision of nurse-led and delivered services within genitourinary medicine in the UK. Results showed that such services are being widely utilised and are generally well supported by medical staff. The delivery of nurse-led and delivered services appears to be quite variable. Clinical guidelines and standards may help to ensure a more uniform approach to these services and help to maintain high standards of care. (Source: International Journal of STD and AIDS)

Correlates of HIV infection among street-based and venue-based sex workers in Vietnam
This study involved secondary data analysis of the ‘HIV/STI Integrated Biological and Behavioral Surveillance’ study in Vietnam in 2009–2010 to examine the correlates of HIV among FSWs. Data collected from 5298 FSWs, including 2530 street-based sex workers and 2768 venue-based sex workers from 10 provinces in Vietnam, were analyzed using descriptive statistics and bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. HIV prevalence among the overall FSW population was 8.6% (n = 453). However, when stratified by FSW subpopulations, HIV prevalence was 10.6% (n = 267) for street-based sex workers and 6.7%...

Constructing a representative sample of out-of-care HIV patients from a representative sample of in-care patients
Individuals infected with HIV who are out of care are at a higher risk of HIV-related morbidity and mortality. It has been difficult to recruit a representative sample of out-of-care patients for epidemiological studies. Using a novel weighting method, we constructed a representative sample of out-of-care HIV patients from a representative sample of in-care patients. In-care patients were weighted based on the probability of receiving care during the study period and the probability of selection to participate in the study, and out-of-care patients were represented by those who were previously out of care and recently retu...

Cervical HPV infection in Romanian women infected with HIV during early childhood
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common cause of cervical cancer worldwide, and Romania has the highest rate of cervical cancer in Europe. Sixty-five young Romanian women infected with HIV during early childhood and 25 control subjects were evaluated for the presence of cervical HPV infection and for cytologic abnormalities. HPV infection was evaluated longitudinally in 42 HIV-infected individuals. Overall 28/65 (43.1%) of HIV-infected and 8/25 (32.0%) of uninfected subjects were infected with HPV, and 21/65 (32.3%) and 6/25 (24%) had high-risk subtypes, respectively. In HIV-infected women, those maintaining or acqui...

Combined treatment of anogenital HPV infection with cryodestruction, podophyllin 25% and post-ablation immunomodulation with sinecatechins 15% ointment - a retrospective analysis
We present a retrospective review of 27 patients who underwent combined therapy for external genital warts by using one or two sessions of cryodestruction combined with 25% podophyllin as the cytotoxic agent, and post-ablation immunomodulation with topical sinecatechins 15% ointment. This approach resulted in an excellent initial clearance rate of 96.3% with a recurrence rate of 7.4% after a total period of six months of follow-up. We suggest the importance of the combined approach in external genital warts management including post-ablative immunomodulation to augment the immune response and combat the residual latent inf...

A Scottish multi-centre service evaluation examining the prevalence and diagnosis of Trichomonas vaginalis in symptomatic women attending sexual health clinics
This study examines the prevalence of TV infection amongst consenting symptomatic women attending three of the largest sexual health clinics in Scotland, United Kingdom. In addition, an evaluation of three testing methods to identify TV from vaginal fluid was performed involving the commercial Hologic APTIMA TV transcription-mediated amplification assay, a real-time PCR assay and microscopy. A total of 398 patients consented to participation and all were tested by the three methods. The prevalence of TV was 2.8% (n = 11), with both molecular assays correctly detecting an additional two cases of TV compared to microscopy. T...

Does service integration improve the sexual and reproductive healthcare of women living with HIV?
The sexual and reproductive health (SRH) care needs of a cohort of HIV-positive women were studied pre- and post-integration of genitourinary medicine (GUM) and SRH services. Pre-integration, 24.9% of women at risk of pregnancy were using an effective method of contraception, with a non-significant improvement post-integration to 39.3%. Pre-integration, 47.6% of pregnancies were unplanned, whilst 50% were still unplanned post-integration. Cervical cytology uptake within the previous 12 months improved significantly. It appears that the integration of services alone does not improve all aspects of the SRH of women living wi...

Consistently high HIV prevalence among men who have sex with men in Chengdu city from 2009 to 2014
To describe the trends of the HIV epidemic among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Chengdu city, China, consecutive cross-sectional surveys were conducted by the Chengdu Center for Disease Control and Prevention. These surveys were carried out between 2009 and 2014 according to the protocol of the national HIV Sentinel Surveillance System. For the 2422 MSM who participated in the survey, the overall HIV prevalence was 15.5% (375/2422, 95% CI 14.0–16.9%). Between 2009 and 2014, the HIV prevalence of MSM remained high, with HIV-positivity rates of 15.0%, 15.1%, 16.3%, 13.9%, 17.8% and 14.0% each year respectively (2 f...

Peru's HIV care continuum among men who have sex with men and transgender women: opportunities to optimize treatment and prevention
The HIV epidemic in Peru is concentrated in men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TW), who have an estimated prevalence > 10%, while the overall population prevalence remains < 1%. Because MSM and TW account for >60% of new infections, it is crucial to understand the full HIV continuum of care for these key populations. We performed a review of the peer-reviewed scientific and grey literature to determine the proportion of HIV-infected MSM and TW in Peru who are diagnosed, linked to and retained in care, are taking antiretroviral therapy (ART), and who have attained virologic suppression. Of the e...

Acquired epidermodysplasia verruciformis in an HIV-positive patient
Epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV) is a rare dermatological manifestation of the human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, which causes distinctive skin lesions in sun-exposed areas. Both inherited and acquired forms exist. Immunocompromised individuals, such as HIV patients, are at risk of acquired EV. EV poses challenges in its management and variable responses are seen in different individuals. In addition, EV carries a significant risk of skin malignancy with certain HPV types that require skin surveillance. A case of acquired EV in a HIV-positive patient is presented in this report. Immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome in a patient with HIV presenting as severe mixed haemolytic anaemia
A patient with a delayed diagnosis of vertically transmitted HIV presented with a rare form of severe warm and cold (mixed) autoimmune haemolytic anaemia, six months after starting antiretroviral therapy. The CD4 count had responded rapidly to introduction of antiretroviral therapy, rising from 5 cells/µL to 93 cells/µL over the course of six months. The haemolysis was resistant to immunoglobulin therapy, eventually responding to corticosteroids. On careful scrutiny of the case, we found the features to be in keeping with immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome; thorough investigations revealed no other tri...

Immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome versus non-immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome lymphoma in HIV patients on antiretroviral therapy
Little is known about differences between immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) and non-IRIS lymphoma in HIV patients on antiretroviral therapy (ART). The aim of this study was to describe the characteristics of IRIS and non-IRIS lymphoma in Korean HIV-positive patients on ART compared with lymphoma in those off ART. Of 1490 patients, 41 (3%) had lymphoma. Of these, 27 cases (66%) were classified as lymphoma off ART, eight as IRIS lymphoma, and six as non-IRIS lymphoma on ART. Hodgkin lymphoma was significantly more common among patients with non-IRIS lymphoma on ART than among those with lymphoma off ART (P =...
