Treatment of co ‐occurring food avoidance and alcohol use disorder in an adult: Possible avoidant restrictive food intake disorder?
DiscussionHowever, excessive alcohol intake had reoccurred at 3‐month follow‐up, accompanied by increases in negative affect and impairment due to eating, indicating that longer‐term therapy may be required for this group of people. (Source: International Journal of Eating Disorders)

Childhood adverse life events, disordered eating, and body mass index in US Military service members
DiscussionFindings support evaluating childhood ALE exposure among service members with disordered eating and weight concerns. Moreover, findings support the need for prospective research to elucidate these relationships. (Source: International Journal of Eating Disorders)

Outcomes of low ‐weight patients with avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder and anorexia nervosa at long‐term follow‐up after treatment in a partial hospitalization program for eating disorders
DiscussionPatients with ARFID and AN exhibit similar improvements in %MBMI when treated in the same PHP and appear to maintain treatment gains at long‐term follow‐up. Additionally, most patients continue to utilize outpatient services after being discharged from a PHP. (Source: International Journal of Eating Disorders)

Distorted weight perception correlates with disordered eating attitudes in Kuwaiti college women
DiscussionThe high proportion of disordered eating attitudes among Kuwaiti college women could not be attributed to obesity alone as the type of disordered eating behavior varied more by weight perception than by weight status. The high levels of eating disorder related symptoms could be due to a combination of the social influences, diet, and lifestyle of college students. Such factors need to be considered by healthcare professionals as early as possible with more focused programs towards promotion of healthy weight for college students. Body composition and physical fitness in women with bulimia nervosa or binge ‐eating disorder
DiscussionOverall, participants with BN or BED displayed adequate physical fitness; however, a high number had unfavorable CRF and body composition. This finding calls for inclusion of physical fitness in routine clinical examinations and guided physical activity and dietary recommendations in the treatment of BN and BED. Psychometric properties of the brief loss of control over eating scale (LOCES ‐B) in early adolescents
DiscussionFindings suggested that the LOCES‐B is a reliable and valid measure of LOC eating in early adolescents. The availability of the LOCES‐B has the potential to elucidate the developmental trajectories, predictors, and outcomes of LOC eating across the full severity spectrum in large cohort studies of youth. Body image flexibility: A predictor and moderator of outcome in transdiagnostic outpatient eating disorder treatment
DiscussionHigher body image flexibility predicted lower global eating disorder psychopathology at every assessment point. Further research is required to replicate findings and explore the benefit of focusing on positive body image in treatment. (Source: International Journal of Eating Disorders)

Network analysis: An innovative framework for understanding eating disorder psychopathology
Abstract Network theory and analysis is an emerging approach in psychopathology research that has received increasing attention across fields of study. In contrast to medical models or latent variable approaches, network theory suggests that psychiatric syndromes result from systems of causal and reciprocal symptom relationships. Despite the promise of this approach to elucidate key mechanisms contributing to the development and maintenance of eating disorders (EDs), thus far, few applications of network analysis have been tested in ED samples. We first present an overview of network theory, review the existing findings in...

On the measurement of thin ‐ideal internalization: Implications for interpretation of risk factors and treatment outcome in eating disorders research
DiscussionResults indicate that the two most commonly used measures of internalization capture both shared and unique constructs. While both measures appear to contribute to the assessment of a global internalization factor, the SATAQ‐4R may be better suited to assess personal acceptance of and desire to achieve a thin body, while the IBSS‐R may be better suited to assess an awareness or acknowledgement of broader sociocultural ideals (e.g., toned, shapely bodies). Continued psychometric investigation of the scales is recommended in order to ensure targeted assessment of the intended constructs. (Source: International ...

A 10 ‐session cognitive‐behavioral therapy (CBT‐T) for eating disorders: Outcomes from a case series of nonunderweight adult patients
This study reports the first outcomes for a shorter, 10‐session form of CBT‐ED (CBT‐T) for such cases, designed to be less demanding of resources. MethodA case series of 106 nonunderweight eating disordered cases were considered for this effectiveness study. A protocolized 10‐session version of CBT‐ED was delivered by clinical assistants, under supervision. Measures assessed eating attitudes and behaviors, anxiety, depression, personality pathology, and the working alliance. Intention‐to‐treat analyses were used. ResultsSuitability, acceptability, working alliance ratings, and retention were all positive. Out...

Cortical thickness patterns as state biomarker of anorexia nervosa
ConclusionsHigher cortical thickness in medial orbitofrontal cortex and insula probably contributes to higher gray matter volume in AN in those regions. The machine‐learning algorithm identified a mixed pattern of mostly higher orbital and insular, but relatively lower superior frontal cortical thickness in individuals with current AN. These novel results suggest that regional cortical thickness patterns could be state markers for AN. (Source: International Journal of Eating Disorders)

Toward valid and reliable brain imaging results in eating disorders
Abstract Human brain imaging can help improve our understanding of mechanisms underlying brain function and how they drive behavior in health and disease. Such knowledge may eventually help us to devise better treatments for psychiatric disorders. However, the brain imaging literature in psychiatry and especially eating disorders has been inconsistent, and studies are often difficult to replicate. The extent or severity of extremes of eating and state of illness, which are often associated with differences in, for instance hormonal status, comorbidity, and medication use, commonly differ between studies and likely add to v...

Risk and resiliency factors related to body dissatisfaction and disordered eating: The identity disruption model
DiscussionThese findings provide initial conceptual support for the identity disruption model and extend previous models of body dissatisfaction and disordered eating to include processes that occur earlier in life. This model opens up the possibility for new interventions that are targeted toward those who are most vulnerable to developing body dissatisfaction and disordered eating.
