Factors that lead to hospitalisation in patients with Parkinson disease —A systematic review
The objective of this review was to identify causes that lead to acute hospitalisation of patients with PD. MethodsA systematic review of English language literature from 1997 to present. FindingsThe incidences of acute general medical or surgical problems that trigger acute hospitalisation in patients with PD are similar to those in the general population. However, falls, acute decompensation of PD symptoms and infections are far more common in PD patients and are responsible for more than 50% of the causes of hospitalisation in this patients’ group. ImplicationsPreventive strategies to avoid decompensation of PD sympto...

Polycystic ovarian syndrome: Assessment of approaches to diagnosis and cardiometabolic monitoring in UK primary care
ConclusionThe underlying pathophysiology of PCOS is still not fully understood. As a result, treatment is often focused on individual symptoms, not the syndrome itself. Robust laboratory led protocols would provide the necessary information to enable an appropriate diagnostic evaluation/cardometabolic monitoring. (Source: International Journal of Clinical Practice)

Uric acid and cardiovascular risk: What genes can say
ConclusionsGenetic evidence based on conventional and novel Mendelian randomisation approaches suggest a modest, if any, causal effect of serum uric acid concentration on the development of cardiovascular disease, suggesting that further study of uric acid genes is needed in order to elucidate the relationship of serum uric acid levels and cardiovascular disease. Effect of characteristics of pharmacotherapy on non ‐adherence in chronic cardiovascular disease: A systematic review and meta‐analysis of observational studies
Conclusions and relevanceThe results of this review suggest that access to insurance or another program that assists with medication costs was a protection factor for non‐adherence. On the other hand, a high frequency of dosing was a risk factor for non‐adherence. Therefore, these characteristics of pharmacotherapy must be considered to improve medication adherence among CVD patients. (Source: International Journal of Clinical Practice)

Assessment of prescribing practices at the primary healthcare facilities in Botswana with an emphasis on antibiotics: Findings and implications
ConclusionsWhile most indications for antibiotic prescriptions were based on signs and symptoms according to ICD, antibiotic prescribing rates were high with some conditions not requiring antibiotics because they are viral infections. There is a need to further improve prescribing practices through induction and training of in‐service prescribers. An effective management tool for monitoring antibiotic prescribing practices at Primary Health Care facilities should be designed and implemented, including developing robust quality indicators. Serum testosterone levels in male hypogonadism: Why and when to check —A review
DiscussionThis review highlights the importance of diagnosing late onset hypogonadism due to its association with morbidity/mortality and benefits following testosterone replacement. Thus, after making recommendations to ensure correct diagnosis we speculate whether the time has come to move away from population derived testosterone levels towards evidence based action limits. Mindfulness for palliative care patients. Systematic review
ConclusionsAlthough two studies have showed statistically significant difference, only one showed effectiveness of mindfulness meditation in improving perceived stress. This study focused on one single session of mindfulness of 5 minutes for adult cancer patients in palliative care, but it was considered as possessing high risk of bias. Other schemes of mindfulness meditation did not show benefit in any outcome evaluated (low and very low quality evidence). (Source: International Journal of Clinical Practice)

Prevalence and characteristics of Australian women aged 45 and older who consult acupuncturists for their osteoarthritis
ConclusionsOur study reveals considerable acupuncture use amongst women with osteoarthritis. There is a need for health care practitioners to be mindful of acupuncture use among their patients presenting with osteoarthritis. Further research is needed to examine the potential benefits of acupuncture for osteoarthritis and to help inform efficient and safe use of this treatment alongside conventional care.
