Serum Wisteria floribunda agglutinin ‐positive Mac‐2 binding protein more reliably distinguishes liver fibrosis stages in non‐alcoholic fatty liver disease than serum Mac‐2 binding protein
ConclusionThis head‐to‐head comparison suggests that WFA+‐M2BP is superior to M2BP for distinguishing liver fibrosis stages in NAFLD patients. A marked discrepancy between the two biomarkers may be indicative of advanced NAFLD (UMIN000023286). (Source: Hepatology Research)

Pretransplant serum procalcitonin level for prediction of early post ‐transplant sepsis in living donor liver transplantation
ConclusionsSurvival of patients with early post‐transplant sepsis was poor and the incidence of sepsis was associated with the pretransplant serum PCT level. Re‐evaluation of the general condition and rescheduling of LT should be considered in a patient with pretransplant serum PCT >0.5 ng/mL. (Source: Hepatology Research)

Splicing analysis of rare/novel synonymous or intronic variants identified in ABCB11 heterozygotes presenting as progressive intrahepatic cholestasis with low γ‐glutamyltransferase
ConclusionsWe successfully identified 5 pathogenic synonymous or intronic variants with some common features. These features might help to choose the right one for further functional assay. (Source: Hepatology Research)

Safety and efficacy of sofosbuvir and ribavirin for genotype 2 hepatitis C Japanese patients with renal dysfunction
ConclusionsSofosbuvir and ribavirin therapy is highly effective and safe for genotype 2 HCV‐infected Japanese patients. However, attention should be paid to baseline renal function when sofosbuvir‐ and ribavirin‐containing regimens are used for patients with renal dysfunction. (Source: Hepatology Research)

Minimally invasive liver resection for hepatocellular carcinoma of patients with liver damage B: a propensity score ‐based analysis.
ConclusionsMILR might be effective for patients with impaired liver function. It reduces surgical complications and consequently shortens hospitalization time. (Source: Hepatology Research)

Efficacy and safety of ombitasvir/paritaprevir/ritonavir combination therapy for genotype 1b chronic hepatitis C patients complicated with chronic kidney disease
ConclusionThe present study showed that the effects and safety of OBV/PTV/r therapy in genotype 1b chronic hepatitis C patients with non‐dialysis CKD were not inferior to those in patients without CKD. (Source: Hepatology Research)

Sequential therapy involving an early switch from entecavir to pegylated interferon ‐α in Japanese patients with chronic hepatitis B
ConclusionThe outcomes of sequential therapy involving an early switch from entecavir to PegIFNα‐2a were unsatisfactory in Japanese patients with chronic hepatitis B. In addition to viral factors, host metabolic characteristics and liver fibrosis/tumor markers can be used for prediction of a sustained response to therapy, but accurate prediction of the therapeutic response is difficult. A multicenter, randomized, controlled trial of S ‐1 monotherapy versus S‐1 and interferon‐α combination therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma with extrahepatic metastases
ConclusionsOncologic outcomes in both treatment groups were favorable compared to previous reports, though there was no significant beneficial effect of adding IFN‐α to S‐1 for the treatment of HCC patients with extrahepatic metastases. (Source: Hepatology Research)

Proposed Diagnostic Criteria for Acute ‐On‐Chronic Liver Failure in Japan
To establish diagnostic criteria for acute‐on‐chronic liver failure (ACLF) in Japan, the Intractable Hepato‐Biliary Disease Study Group of Japan performed a multicenter pilot survey for patients fulfilling the APASL, EASL‐Clif Consortium, or Chinese Medical Association (CMA) diagnostic criteria for ACLF and found that the APASL criteria were suitable for screening Japanese patients with ACLF when patients whose conditions were triggered by gastrointestinal bleeding were included within the disease entity, while the EASL‐Clif Consortium criteria were useful for classifying the severity of the patients’ condition...

Fatty liver index predicts incident diabetes in a Japanese general population with and without impaired fasting glucose
ConclusionsOur results showed that FLI is associated with the development of diabetes regardless of sex and the presence or absence of IFG and that it may be a useful predictor of future risk of incident diabetes even in individuals without IFG. (Source: Hepatology Research)

Development and validation of a scoring system to predict progression to acute ‐on‐chronic liver failure in patients with acute exacerbation of chronic hepatitis B
ConclusionThe independent risk factors associated with progressing to ACLF in patients with AE of CHB are HBV DNA, INR, and old age. Our risk prediction model is useful for predicting the development of ACLF. (Source: Hepatology Research)
