Percutaneous fixation of avulsion fracture at the plantar lateral base of the first metatarsal using ZipTight Fixation System: A case report
Avulsion fractures of the plantar lateral base of the first metatarsal are well-known to occur with tarsometatarsal joint injuries (Lisfranc injury) that involve medial displacement of the first metatarsal. According to Myerson ’s classification of the tarsometatarsal injuries, the appearance of this avulsion fracture can be seen with type B-1 and C injuries. Type B1 injuries are identified by partial incongruity caused by medial displacement of the first metatarsal alone. Medial displacement of the first metatarsal with concomitant lateral displacement of one or more of the lesser metatarsals creates a divergent deformi...

Patient-reported outcome after hallux valgus surgery — a two year follow up
Hallux valgus (HV) is a deformity of the forefoot producing painful disability. Estimates of the prevalence of the HV vary widely, ranging from 21 to 70% in epidemiologic studies [1,2]. The prevalence is higher in women and increases with age [1]. The deformity is characterized by lateral deviation of the great toe, medial deviation of the first metatarsal bone including progressive subluxation of the first metatarsophalangeal joint. The patients ’ complaints are (i) restrictions of wearing shoes, (ii) pain over the medial eminence, (iii) pain underneath the second metatarsal head, and (iv) cosmetic concerns. (Source: Fo...

Total ankle arthroplasty and national registers: What is the impact on scientific production?
In recent years the number of countries that have adopted national joint registries throughout the world has greatly increased in order to evaluate and assess clinical and radiographic outcomes, safety and survivorship of the implants [1 –3]. Most arthroplasty registers mainly concern hip and knee replacements, while only six (Australia, England/Wales/Northern Ireland, Finland, New Zealand, Norway, and Sweden) countries recruit and report the results of ankle prostheses [4–9]. The purpose of large-scale registers is to highlight results as accurately as possible annually; the quality of the data reported is heavily dep...

Surgical versus conservative treatment for ankle fractures in adults – A systematic review and meta-analysis of the benefits and harms
Ankle fractures are often the result of a fall from a standing height or from participating in sports [1]. These fractures are common and represent one out of every 10 bone injuries with an overall incidence of 169 per 100,000 person-years [1,2]. During the past decades, the number of ankle fractures has increased steadily which is thought to be caused by an increase in the number of people participating in sports and a shift in demographics toward an elderly population [2 –4]. The history and development of the journal from the view of a founding editor
In writing this editorial I returned to my bound issues of “Foot& Ankle Surgery ” from its inception. The Journal was first published in 1994 (Volume 1 with three issues). It was then entitled “The European Journal of Foot& Ankle Surgery ” and was the official Journal of the European Society of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ESFAS). In Volume 1 all the articles were review articles, written by those who instigated ESFAS with the help of some of their associates. They were Prof. G. Pisani, Drs. MM Stephens, N. Joint debridement and microfracture for treatment late-stage Freiberg-Kohler ’s disease: Long-term follow-up study
Although the etiology of Freiberg-Kohlers disease is controversial, most theories point to a vascular deficit of the metatarsal head associated with mechanical overload [1,2]. Smillie classified the natural history of Freiberg-Kohler ’s disease into five stages according to macroscopic appearance (Table 1) [3]. In the early stages of Freiberg-Kohler’s disease, such as stages I, and II conservative methods should be recommended first, whereas surgical methods are usually reserved for stages III, IV, and V [4–7].
