Tea polyphenol decreased growth and invasion in human ovarian cancer cells
This study was carried out to analyze the effects of TP on the ovarian cancer cells and possible mechanisms involved. TP led to inhibition of cell growth in a time- and dose-dependent manner, and promoted entry into the apoptosis-phase of the cell cycle. TP also decreased the invasion of ovarian cancer cells in vitro. In addition, TP treatment upregulated the mRNA expressions rate of Bax/Bcl-2 and downregulated Cyclin D and MMP2 mRNA expressions. Taken together, our data highlight that TP could be a potential therapeutic strategy for ovarian cancer. These findings also suggested that oncogens are involved in the anti-cance...

Ablative fractional laser improves treatment of actinic keratoses with Ingenol Mebutate
Actinic keratoses (AK) are pre-neoplastic lesions related to an excessive ultraviolet exposure that represent an emerging issue in the area of skin diseases which undergo high risk for developing squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). In this open study, we tested the safety efficacy profile of sequential ablative laser and Ingenol Mebutate gel (IngMeb). Thirteen patients with a total of 99 lesions were selected for this open study. When multiple lesions on the same area were found, the treatment area was split in half. In one group, fractional CO2 laser microablative treatment was performed the day before three daily applications...

Array-CGH in pediatric neurology: A prospective observational study
Array-comparative genomic hybridization (Array-CGH) has been proposed as the first efficient approach to scan the entire genome for variations in DNA copy number. This diagnostic method is based on the study of total genomic DNA isolated from any sample and reference cell populations, differentially labelled and hybridized to DNA microarrays. The method has been initially applied in clinical genetics research and has recently also been used in cancer research, as tumor genomes have a wide variety of copy number phenotypes, indicating different types of genetic instability. In this field, array-CGH has been demonstrated to ...

Garlic tablet supplementation reduces lipopolysaccharide-induced TNF-alpha production by peripheral blood mononuclear cells
This study was designed to investigate whether garlic tablets possess anti-inflammatory and lipid-lowering effects in healthy adults. Twelve healthy adults participated in a randomized, cross-over design with a three-week treatment and a two-week washout period. Participants received either garlic powder tablets twice daily or two placebo tablets/day for three weeks. Plasma and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) were isolated from fasting blood samples at baseline and after each three-week treatment with garlic or placebo. PBMC were cultured, stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and changes in cell culture supe...

Improved corrosion resistance and biocompatibility of a calcium phosphate coating on a magnesium alloy for orthopedic applications
In this study a calcium phosphate (Ca–P) coating was fabricated on the surface of an AZ31 alloy by a chemical deposition process, and the in vitro and in vivo studies were carried out on a Ca–P-coated and uncoated AZ31 alloy to determine the effect of Ca–P coating on the corrosion behavior and biocompatibility of the AZ31 alloy. The morphology and composition of the Ca–P coating were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. The corrosion behavior of the Ca-P coating was evaluated by a static immersion test and the effects of the Ca–P coating on biocompa...

Effects of etomidate in the adrenal and cytokine responses to hemorrhagic shock in rats
Hemorrhagic shock (HS) induces a compensatory endocrine and cytokine response which aims to restore homeostasis. This response can be modulated by general anesthetics. To our knowledge, no studies have evaluated if etomidate modulates this response in experimental HS. After being premedicated with buprenorphine (0.05 mg/kg subcutaneously), male Wistar rats were anaesthetized with 5% isoflurane and divided into three groups: G1 (control, n = 16), G2 (n = 13), and G3 (n = 14). G2 and G3 were subjected to HS by collecting 30% of their blood volume and resuscitated 90 min later with the collected blood and normal saline, in a ...

Traditional uses, phytochemistry, and pharmacological properties of Sophora alopecuroides L
Sophora alopecuroides L., known as ku dou zi in China, has a long history as a traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of bacillary dysentery, enteritis, hepatitis, and other diseases, and exerts a critical role in anti-tumor. It contains abundant of alkaloids such as oxymatrine, matrine, and total alkaloids, which have been developed in China as anti-disease drugs related with inhibition of the angiogenesis-associated factors, anti-inflammatory response, and regulation of JNK, p38 MAP kinase, and NF-B signal pathways and so on. The purpose of this review is to take comprehensive summary of the botany, traditional u...

Endometrial changes after methotrexate treatment: Relation with multiple nabothian cysts and future pregnancies
A clinical study was conducted in order to validate the effect of methotrexate on 30 patients with ectopic pregnancy (EP). A typical ultrasound appearance of multiple cysts of Naboth in the cervix was observed on six cases that are studied below. Endometrial sample with endogyn was retrieved from the six cases after the treatment with methotrexate was complete. The cytological results were studied and there were many changes found in the endometrial cells, in their cores, and some inflammatory cells as well. Two out of the six cases studied show more profound evidence. The cellular appearance of the endometrium after the t...

Can neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio be a novel biomarker of inflammation in children with asthma?
Neutrophils are known to play a role in airway inflammation and are activated in inflammatory lung diseases such as asthma. In adult studies the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) was found to be a possible biomarker for both airway and systemic inflammation. However, there is a limited understanding regarding NLR in the pediatric age group. To assess NLR as a biomarker for inflammation in pediatric asthma, 54 children admitted to hospital with exacerbation of asthma between March and October 2013 were enrolled into our study. Complete blood counts were obtained during both exacerbation and an asymptomatic period covering a...
