An age-period-cohort analysis of mortality rates for stomach, colorectal, liver, and lung cancer among prefectures in Japan, 1999 –2018
ConclusionsThe decreasing rates of cohort effects for stomach and liver cancer varied widely among prefectures. It is possible that this will influence cancer mortality rates in each prefecture in the future. (Source: Environmental Health and Preventive Medicine)

Lack of association between multiple polymorphisms in aryl hydrocarbon receptor ( AhR ) gene and cancer susceptibility
ConclusionThis meta-analysis provides evidence that the rs2066853, rs7796976, or rs2074113 polymorphism inAhR gene is not a susceptible predictor of cancer. Further clinical and functional investigation betweenAhR polymorphisms and cancer susceptibility are needed. (Source: Environmental Health and Preventive Medicine)

Association between self-reported snoring and hypertension among Chinese Han population aged 30 –79 in Chongqing, China
ConclusionsPeople who snore frequently should pay close attention to their blood pressure levels in order to achieve early prevention of hypertension, particularly for snorers who are female and aged under 45; importance should be attached to their blood pressure control. Acute effect of ambient fine particulate matter on heart rate variability: an updated systematic review and meta-analysis of panel studies
ConclusionShort-term exposure to PM2.5 was associated with decreased HRV levels. Future studies are warranted to clarity the exact mechanism of exposure to PM2.5 on the cardiovascular system through disturbance of autonomic nervous function. (Source: Environmental Health and Preventive Medicine)

The use of geographical analysis in assessing the impact of patients ’ home addresses on their participation in outpatient cardiac rehabilitation: a prospective cohort study
ConclusionsUsing geographical analysis, we successfully evaluated the factors influencing patients ’ participation in OCR. This illustrates the importance of using geographical analysis in future epidemiological and clinical studies.Trial registrationUMIN000028435. (Source: Environmental Health and Preventive Medicine)

Estimation of daily sodium and potassium excretion from overnight urine of Japanese children and adolescents
ConclusionWe obtained validated equations to estimate daily Na and K excretion with accessible variables such as Na, K, and Cr concentrations of overnight urine, body height and weight, and age for children and adolescents. When using the obtained equations, caution should be paid to small but definite biases and measurement errors. (Source: Environmental Health and Preventive Medicine)

Effects of the built environment on physical activity: a systematic review of longitudinal studies taking sex/gender into account
ConclusionThis review sheds light on the relevance of the built environment on PA. By focusing on sex/gender differences, a new aspect was addressed that should be further analyzed in future research and considered by urban planners and other practitioners. Associations of socioeconomic status and lifestyle factors with dental neglect of elementary school children: the MEXT Super Shokuiku School Project
ConclusionsSocioeconomic status was the strongest factor associated with dental neglect despite the fact that the children ’s medical expenses are paid in full by the National Health Insurance in Toyama, Japan. Future studies should investigate what factors prevent parents of non-affluent families from taking their children to dental clinics and how they can be socially supported to access adequate medical care. Spectator medicine at an international mega sports event: Rugby World Cup 2019 in Japan
ConclusionPreparation and provision of appropriate medical service for spectators is a key factor for mass-gathering events. During RWC 2019, the majority (91.5%) of patients who sought medical attention did so for minor complaints, which were easily assessed and managed. On the other hand, a higher WBGT situation contributes significantly to an increased PPR (< 21 versus> 25, 2.04 versus 4.27,p = 0.04). Careful medical preparation, management, and development of public education programs for higher WBGT situations will be required in the future for similar international mega sports events. Resveratrol inhibits Ca 2+ signals and aggregation of platelets
ConclusionsThe results suggest that resveratrol inhibits thrombin-induced platelet aggregation through decreasing Ca2+ release from its stores and inhibiting store-operated Ca2+ influx into platelets. (Source: Environmental Health and Preventive Medicine)

PM 2.5 exposure and DLEC1 promoter methylation in Taiwan Biobank participants
ConclusionsWe found significant positive associations between PM2.5 and DLEC1 promoter methylation. Regular exercise at PM2.5< 27.37  μg/m3 seemingly regulated DLEC1 promoter methylation. (Source: Environmental Health and Preventive Medicine)

Associations between thyroid-stimulating hormone and hypertension according to thyroid cyst status in the general population: a cross-sectional study
ConclusionsTSH is positively associated with hypertension only in individuals without thyroid cysts. The correlation between the TSH and free T3 levels was stronger in the subjects without thyroid cysts than in those with thyroid cysts. Therefore, the absence of thyroid cysts could be related to the association between TSH level and hypertension, possibly by indicating that the subjects without thyroid cysts had limited thyroid hormone reserves. Therefore, the absence of thyroid cysts could indicate the latent functional damage of the thyroid. (Source: Environmental Health and Preventive Medicine)

Household air pollution and under-five mortality in sub-Saharan Africa: an analysis of 14 demographic and health surveys
ConclusionsHAP exposure may be associated with an increased risk of under-five mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. More carefully designed longitudinal studies are required to contribute to these findings. In addition, awareness campaigns on the effects of HAP exposure and interventions to reduce the use of biomass fuels are required in SSA. (Source: Environmental Health and Preventive Medicine)

Environmental factors involved in SARS-CoV-2 transmission: effect and role of indoor environmental quality in the strategy for COVID-19 infection control
This article summarizes the environmental factors involved in SARS-CoV-2 transmission, including a strategy to prevent SARS-CoV-2 transmission in a building environment. SARS-CoV-2 can persist on surfaces of fomites for at least 3  days depending on the conditions. If SARS-CoV-2 is aerosolized intentionally, it is stable for at least several hours. SARS-CoV-2 is inactivated rapidly on surfaces with sunlight. Close-contact aerosol transmission through smaller aerosolized particles is likely to be combined with respiratory dr oplets and contact transmission in a confined, crowded, and poorly ventilated indoor environment, ...
