Hemicolectomy in a patient with aortic valve disease: Case report
Publication date: Available online 30 June 2016 Source:Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology Author(s): María Ángeles Rodríguez-Navarro, Daniel Rastrollo-Peña, Juan Iranzo-Reverter, José Luis Sánchez-Ortega, Rosario García-Fernández, Clara Díaz-Alejo Patients with valve disease are at a higher risk of perioperative complications in the context of non-cardiac surgery. The active involvement of the anaesthetist from the moment of the pre-anaesthesia assessment to determine the severity of the disease is crucial. The purpose of this report on the management of a clinical case is to highlight the need fo...

Estimation of the optimum length of endotracheal tube insertion in adults
Conclusion The traditional method of determining the insertion length of the endotracheal tube, 21cm for women and 23cm for men, shows a high incidence of endobronchial intubations in the analyzed population. The optimal insertion depth of the endotracheal tube can be reliably estimated through the use of prediction equations based on patient height, as proposed in this study. Characterization and analysis of adverse events in closed liability cases involving anaesthetists who received legal support from the Colombian Society of Anaesthesia and Resuscitation (S.C.A.R.E.), Colombia, 1993–2012
Conclusions In the cases reviewed, the majority of adverse events happened in low risk patients, in low complexity institutions. The PACU was a sensitive setting for the occurrence of adverse events. It is important to consider environmental factors when analysing adverse events. (Source: Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology)

Interactions between home care and hospital care during pregnancy and postpartum among low-income women in a maternity clinic in Cartagena, Colombia
Conclusion Family-centered care requires acknowledging the role of relatives and other members of the women's social networks as guides in the healthcare process. Likewise, recognizing the socio-economic conditions of women requires adapting health services to the needs of women and their families in order to avoid reproducing social inequalities. Randomized cross-over clinical trial comparing two pharmacokinetic models of propofol using entropy indices
Conclusion The study suggests that both pharmacokinetic models are equivalent in terms of stability of depth of anesthesia. It is important to keep testing determinants of the efficacy of the models in different types of population because their behavior according to individual characteristics of patients or variables such as cost-effectiveness could end up tilting the scale. Pharyngeal perforation during therapeutic endoscopy procedure. Case report
Publication date: Available online 30 May 2016 Source:Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology Author(s): Humberto Fernández-Ramos, Edid Fabián González-Guzmán, Heilén María Ramos-Montero, Diego Armando Gualy-Cuchimba, Víctor Humberto Guerrero-Legro The pharynx is a musculomembranous tube common to the upper respiratory tract and the initial segment of the GI tract. Any endoscopic therapeutic procedure requires the participation of a competent anesthetist to secure the patency and control of the airway, upon the induction of general anesthesia that blocks the protective reflexes and hence prevents the passa...

Intraoperative recurrence of probable allergic reaction to remifentanil. Case report
Conclusion Any medication or potential allergen to which a patient is exposed during the perioperative period may cause anaphylaxis; the usual culprits are neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBA). In 80% of cases of hypersensitivity to medications, the origin is not immunological; the only way to confirm anaphylaxis is by means of biological and skin testing performed in a unit specializing in allergy and anaesthesia. In this case, confirmation was not possible because, in Colombia, the specific technological and biological resources are lacking. (Source: Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology)
