Limbic encephalitis with phenotypic NMDA receptor antibodies in patients with de novo diagnosis of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. Case report
Publication date: Available online 14 December 2016 Source:Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology Author(s): Diego Muñoz, Dora L. Hernández, Nelson Giraldo Malignancy-associated limbic encephalitis was first described in 1968. Since then, cases have been reported in association with the Herpes Simplex virus, Hashimoto's encephalopathy, lupus, Sjögren's syndrome and paraneoplasias. A syndrome with prominent psychiatric symptoms was described in 2005: consisting of memory loss, reduced level of consciousness and central hypoventilation in four young women with ovarian teratoma and antibodies against an antigen highly ex...

Flow phenomenon, a differential diagnosis in refractory hypoxaemia in patients with anterior mediastinal mass. Case report
Conclusions Flow phenomenon-related refractory hypoxaemia must be suspected as an exclusion diagnosis in patients with a mediastinal mass. Prone ventilation is proposed as a bridging therapy in order to revert a life-threatening condition. (Source: Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology)

A diagnostic dilemma in an alert patient with pulmonary oedema following craniotomy: A case report
Conclusion In this case, we merely might have followed the restoration process from neurologic pulmonary oedema developing during the operation. (Source: Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology)

Adverse events in paediatric patients taken to magnetic resonance imaging under sedation or anaesthesia
Conclusion Performing magnetic resonance imaging studies under sedation or anaesthesia given by an anaesthetist in patients under 15 years of age is safe. However a risk-benefit analysis is required in hospitalized or decompensated patients, in order to assess the best option. (Source: Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology)

Hypothermia in elective surgery: The hidden enemy
Conclusions There are effective measures easy to set up, economical and effective to prevent hypothermia; the most important is the patient warm with hot air under pressure for 1h and maintenance of air conditioning in the room above 22°C. We just need to understand these measures and start to implement them. (Source: Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology)

The basic principles of anesthesia for the neonate
Conclusion In spite of the persistence of large gaps in our knowledge in this physiology and pharmacology, common modern anesthetic management principles for neonatal surgery have significantly improved clinical outcomes. (Source: Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology)

Anesthetic management in two infants with cystic adenomatoid malformation – Case report
Publication date: Available online 5 December 2016 Source:Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology Author(s): Angélica Paola Fajardo-Escolar, Lorena Díaz-Bohada This case describes the anesthetic technique used in two symptomatic neonates with a prenatal diagnosis of cystic adenomatoid malformation that underwent surgery under general anesthesia at the San Ignacio University Hospital. One was under one-lung ventilation and ultrasound-guided caudal catheter analgesia and the second one with general anesthesia and two-lung ventilation. A cystic adenomatoid malformation is a rare pathology with improved outcomes with early d...

Developmental pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of parenteral opioids and nonsteroidal anti-nflammatory drugs in neonates and infants
Conclusions Pharmacology in neonates and infants is unique and must be considered in this vulnerable population. Recommendations for administration of these analgesics are presented based on their unique pharmacokinetic properties. Individual patient variation and clinical response must also be taken into account. (Source: Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology)

Postoperative residual curarization at the post-anesthetic care unit of a university hospital: A cross-sectional study
Conclusions A high prevalence of postoperative residual curarization persists in university hospitals, despite a reduced use of “long-lasting” neuromuscular blockers. Strategies to assure neuromuscular monitoring practice and access to therapeutic alternatives in this setting must be considered. Intraoperative neuromuscular blockers using algorithms and continued education in this field must be priorities within anesthesia services. (Source: Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology)

Sedation for transcatheter replacement of Melody ® pulmonary valve: Case report
Conclusion The ideal anesthetic technique for transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement is controversial. There is a debate over the merits of general anesthesia and deep sedation. Each case must be decided on after a careful preoperative evaluation, considering the risk/benefit and patient cooperation. The experience at our center using deep sedation is promising, but we have an alternative plan to convert to general anesthesia if necessary. (Source: Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology)

Airway management in patients with cervical spine trauma and neurological symptoms. Case reports
We present three patients with traumatic injuries associated neurological symptoms and cervical spine. All intubations were assisted with fiber bronchoscope, without removing the cervical collar and patients remained awake. All patients were examined again after intubation with no evidence of worsening of their neurological symptoms. We can conclude that the fiberoptic assisted intubation has several advantages in the care of these patients. (Source: Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology)
