Vitamin D, linoleic acid, arachidonic acid and COX-2 in colorectal cancer patients in relation to disease stage, tumour localisation and disease progression
Publication date: Available online 1 July 2019Source: Arab Journal of GastroenterologyAuthor(s): Berska Joanna, Bugajska Jolanta, Grabowska Agnieszka, Hodorowicz-Zaniewska Diana, Sztefko KrystynaAbstractBackground and study aimEvidence shows that vitamin D and cyclooxygenase type 2 (COX-2) might play role in aetiology/progression of cancer. It is suggested that antitumour effect of vitamin D depends on vitamin D-receptor (VDR) expression. Aim of the study was to determine vitamin D and polyunsaturated fatty acids in colorectal cancer patients.Patients and methodsA total of 39 patients with colorectal cancer (mean ±...

Conversion to EUS-guided internal gallbladder drainage from percutaneous cholecystostomy: A successful case using a novel plastic stent
Publication date: Available online 4 June 2019Source: Arab Journal of GastroenterologyAuthor(s): Yuki Hayashi, Kosuke Minaga, Tomoe Yoshikawa, Tatsuya Ishii, Hisakazu Matsumoto, Yoshito Uenoyama, Yukitaka YamashitaAbstractFor acute cholecystitis with high surgical risk, endoscopic ultrasound-guided gallbladder drainage (EUS-GBD) has shown high clinical and technical success rates. Dilation of the punctured fistula is a technically challenging aspect of EUS-GBD. Over-dilation makes stent insertion easier; however, it increases the risk of bile leakage. Currently, the endoscopic devices available for EUS-GBD are limited, whi...

Hydatid disease of the liver with portal vein invasion mimicking portal vein thrombosis
We present the ultrasonography (US) and computed tomography (CT) findings of a 77-year-old male with hydatid disease of the liver with portal vein invasion mimicking portal vein thrombosis. Colour Doppler US confirmed the lack of blood flow within the portal vein and stigmata of cavernomatosis. CT clearly demonstrated a communication between the multiloculated lesion and the portal vein and the multiple daughter vesicles obstructing the portal vein. The consideration of this complication will make it possible to distinguish this entity from portal vein thrombosis and, thus, the management of the patients with hydatid cyst ...

Characterization of PI3KCA and BRAF mutations in gastric adenocarcinoma: An approach to a personalized targeted therapy for Moroccan HER2 overexpressed patients
ConclusionThe association between HER2 expression and PI3KCA alteration in gastric adenocarcinoma is most probably necessary to identify trastuzumab responders. Consequently, the 83,64% rate of HER2-positive patients harboring wild-type mutations possibly represents the portion of patients responding to trastuzumab while the 16,36% rate of patients carrying at least one of the studied mutations represents the portion of potentially non responsive patients to the targeted therapy, and thus may be considered as good candidates for multi-drug targeted therapy. Giant duodenal Brunner’s gland hamartoma successfully treated via endoscopic mucosal resection
We describe a patient with a giant Brunner’s gland hamartoma in the duodenum who was safely treated by endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR). Oesophagogastroduodenoscopy revealed a large pedunculated and elongated polypoid lesion measuring approximately 70 mm in longitudinal diameter, located at the anterior wall of the duodenal bulb. We diagnosed her as having gastrointestinal bleeding originating from this lesion. Although we considered surgical intervention initially, en bloc EMR, a less invasive treatment, was fi...
