Guideline Implementation: Minimally Invasive Surgery, Part 1
Since its inception in the early 1990s, technological developments have made minimally invasive surgery the preferred approach for many operative procedures. However, perioperative personnel have had to  develop new skills and techniques to manage this technology. The advent of robotic-assisted procedures in the early 2000s added another level of complexity to the perioperative arena. The updated AORN “Guideline for minimally invasive surgery” provides guidance for creating a safe environment for patients undergoing a wide range of procedures in which complex, advanced equipment and techniques are used. Improving Patient Safety by Practicing in a Just Culture
In light of the results of the 2016 national election that indicate the Affordable Care Act1 may undergo changes, the stress from the uncertainty of our country ’s future health care system and who will incur the associated costs has put added pressure on health care practitioners and raised the question of how health care organizations can remain viable while providing a safe working environment for personnel and safe care for patients. Evidence appraisal of de Jonge SW, Atema JJ, Solomkin JS, Boermeester MA. Meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis of triclosan-coated sutures for the prevention of surgical-site infection.
Editor ’s note: Reading research and incorporating valid research results into practice is a vital part of ensuring that perioperative nursing practice is evidence based. The AORN Research Evidence Appraisal Tools can help perioperative nurses evaluate research. There are three tools for evaluation of th e different types of evidence: the Research Evidence Appraisal Tool–Study, the Research Evidence Appraisal Tool–Summary, and the Non-Research Evidence Appraisal Tool. These tools are used to evaluate the evidence upon which AORN’s guidelines are based. (Source: AORN Journal)

Embrace Action: Advocate for Perioperative Nursing
Most state legislative sessions take place during the first half of the year, and 2017 has been a busy year for legislation affecting health care. In regard to legislation specifically affecting the perioperative profession, the efforts of the AORN Government Affairs Department align with AORN ’s Policy Agenda. AORN boldly pursued legislation to require an RN circulator to be present in every OR for the duration of each surgical procedure in two states: Arkansas, where the bill failed to pass the House Public Health and Welfare Committee, and Vermont, where the bill passed the Senate an d currently sits in the House Heal...

There is Magic in Collaboration
Patient safety is a team effort. Every person who interacts with a patient, along with the physical environment in which care is delivered, has the potential to affect that patient ’s physical and emotional condition. However, no single caregiver or department can ensure safe and effective outcomes independently. Collaboration is most effective in an environment in which the participants respect one another. Every perioperative nurse should take the time to develop relations hips with colleagues in all the disciplines involved in perioperative care. (Source: AORN Journal)
