Treatment of child obesity
AbstractPrevention of obesity should have the highest priority and be started as early in life as possible in high-risk families. This review covers the most promising areas of today ’s research aimed at finding better ways of treating obesity in the future and an overview of the treatment choices available at present. The cause of obesity is genetic in approximately 40–50% of adults and probably a larger proportion of children. This means that it is possible to remain overw eight without a higher calorie intake than that of individuals of normal weight who lack the genetic susceptibility to obesity. Treatment is recom...

Lymphocytic gastritis in a child with hemophagocytic syndrome
We describe a case of LG in a 2-year-old child who died of a hepatitis A virus-induced hemophagocytic syndrome (HPS). LG was diagnosed retrospectively at the postmortem examinat ion. The stomach showed diffuse thickening of mucosal folds with small erosions. On microscopic examination prominent intraepithelial infiltration of the gastric mucosa by T-cells was found, but the small bowel showed no villous atrophy, excluding the diagnosis of celiac disease. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first description of a case of LG associated with an infection-related HPS. (Source: Annals of Diagnostic Paediatric Pathology)

Coexistence of arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy and chronic myocarditis in children
AbstractArrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) is a cardiomyopathy described in adults as a risk factor in sudden unexpected cardiac death. The disease is of unknown etiology and is characterized by progressive fatty or fibrofatty replacement of the subendocardial layer of the heart muscle, predominantly of the right ventricle. The disease is not associated with primary pulmonary disease or mitral insufficiency. The aim of the present paper is to show that ARVC in children coexists with chronic myocarditis, as was shown with the aid of immunocytochemical staining for markers for T-lymphocytes (CD3, CD4, CD8...

Nonclassic congenital adrenal hyperplasia due to 21-hydroxylase deficiency: frequency in children with precocious pubarche and in adolescent girls with menstrual disturbances and/or hirsutism
AbstractWe searched for nonclassic congenital adrenal hyperplasia resulting from 21-hydroxylase deficiency [NC-CAH(21-OH)] in 272 patients: 123 (92 female, 31male), aged 3.2 –12 years (group I) with a history of precocious pubarche (onset 6.2 ±1.3 years) and in 149 adolescent girls aged 11.8–18 years with symptoms developed after normal puberty: 70 with isolated hirsutism, 71 with hirsutism accompanied by menstrual disturbances, 6 with menstrual disturbances only, 1 with clitoromegaly only. We used 24-h urinary steroid profiling by capillary gas chromatography for diagnosis. NC-CAH(21-OH) was diagnosed in 11 patients ...

Application of DEXA in body composition assessment in children
AbstractClinical and research applications of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry in childhood are reviewed. Originally used for bone mineralization assessment in adults with osteoporosis, total body dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry is now also used currently alone or combined with other techniques for assessment of fat mass and fat-free mass. Low invasiveness, accuracy, swiftness and availability of pediatric software make total-body dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry suitable for studying body composition in a wide variety of metabolic and nutritional disorders in childhood such as simple or genetic obesity, insulin-dependent...

Intestinal lymphangiectasia in a 33-month-old girl
AbstractA case of intestinal lymphangiectasia in a 33-month-old girl is presented. Light microscopy showed only focal lesions consistent with this entity. The ultrastructural findings of normal absorptive cells with expansion of the basolateral intercellular spaces containing fluid and occasional lymphocytes in histologically normal adjacent areas of jejunal biopsies suggest that the use of electron microscopy may help to diagnose intestinal lymphangiectasia when the lesions are focal or less evident under light microscopy. Epithelioid schwannoma
AbstractA 17-year-old girl with epithelioid malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) arising in the sural nerve is reported. The tumor grew in a nodular pattern and was composed of nests and solid trabeculi of tumor cells separated by hyaline stroma. Immunohisto-chemical reactions showed diffuse positivity for S-100 protein and co-expression of vimentin and GFAP in the entire tumor cell population. Cytokeratins (AE1/3) were expressed in scattered tumor cells. Immunohisto-chemistry revealed slender actin-positive stromal cells with long processes interposed between the hyaline matrix and the tumor cells. Ultrastructu...

Acute gonadotropin response to the gonadotropin releasing hormone agonist (decapeptyl) in girls with pubertal pathology
AbstractThe aim of the study was to assess the effect of a single injection of the GnRH agonist decapeptyl on gonadotropin secretion in girls with different pubertal disorders. The test was performed in two groups of girls with premature thelarche (younger and older than 2 years of age), girls with premature adrenarche and postmenarcheal girls with policystic ovaries. The GnRH agonist decapeptyl stimulated gonadotropins secretion in pre- and postmenarcheal girls. The responsiveness of LH was increased significantly in puberty. FSH response was exaggerated in the girls with premature thelarche before the age of 2, but in ol...
