Mild Cognitive Impairment is Associated With White Matter Integrity Changes in Late-Myelinating Regions Within the Corpus Callosum
This study tested whether evidence of reverse myelination was observed in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) using a data-driven analytic approach based on life span developmental data. Whole-brain high-resolution diffusion tensor imaging scans were obtained for 31 patients with MCI and 79 demographically matched healthy older adults. Comparisons across corpus callosum (CC) regions of interest (ROIs) showed decreased fractional anisotropy (FA) in the body but not in the genu or splenium; early-, middle-, and late-myelinating ROIs restricted to the CC revealed decreased FA in late- but not early- or middle-myelinating ROIs. Vo...

The Effect of a Personalized Dementia Care Intervention for Caregivers From Australian Minority Groups
This study addressed the gap by testing the hypothesis that personalized caregiver support provided by a team led by a care coordinator of the person with dementia would improve competence for caregivers from minority groups in managing dementia. A randomised controlled trial was utilised to test the hypothesis. Sixty-one family caregivers from 10 minority groups completed the trial. Outcome variables were measured prior to the intervention, at 6 and 12 months after the commencement of trial. A linear mixed effect model was used to estimate the effectiveness of the intervention. The intervention group showed a significant ...

Direct-to-Consumer Prescription Medicine Advertising and Seniors Knowledge of Alzheimers Disease
This study examined whether seniors’ exposure to direct-to-consumer advertising (DTCA) for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) medicine contributes to his or her subjective and objective knowledge of AD. Methods: A self-administered survey was conducted with a sample of 626 US seniors who were registered for an online consumer research panel. Results: The study found that (1) exposure to DTCA for AD medicine was positively related to seniors’ subjective knowledge of AD, (2) DTCA exposure had no significant relationship with overall objective knowledge of AD, and (3) DTCA exposure might influence knowledge of speci...

Apolipoprotein E Allele and Hearing Thresholds in Older Adults
Conclusion: Our results suggest that APOE-E4 allele status may be marginally associated with better hearing thresholds in older adults. (Source: American Journal of Alzheimer's Disease and Other Dementias)

Incidence of Tube Feeding in 7174 Newly Admitted Nursing Home Residents With and Without Dementia
Conclusion: It seems that not dementia itself but the overall clinical condition might be a predictor of tube feeding placement. (Source: American Journal of Alzheimer's Disease and Other Dementias)

Development of the Knowledge of Dementia Competencies Self-Assessment Tool
Competent dementia care requires caregivers with specialized knowledge and skills. The Knowledge of Dementia Competencies Self-Assessment Tool was developed to help direct care workers (DCWs) assess their knowledge of 7 dementia competencies identified by the Michigan Dementia Coalition. Item selection was guided by literature review and expert panel consultation. It was given to 159 DCWs and readministered to 57 DCWs in a range of long-term care settings and revised based on qualitative feedback and statistical item analyses, resulting in 82 items demonstrating good internal consistency and test–retest reliability. ...

Clinically Unsuspected Prion Disease Among Patients With Dementia Diagnoses in an Alzheimer's Disease Database
Conclusion: The proportion of patients with dementia with clinically unrecognized but autopsy-confirmed prion disease was small. Besides confirming clinically suspected cases, neuropathology is useful to identify unsuspected clinically atypical cases of prion disease. Detection of Amyloid {beta} Signature in the Lens and Its Correlation in the Brain to Aid in the Diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease
We report the findings from a clinical trial in which a group of patients clinically diagnosed with probable Alzheimer’s disease (AD) were discriminated from an age-matched group of healthy volunteers (HVs) with statistical significance (P < .001). The results from 20 patients with AD and 20 HVs were obtained by a Fluorescent Ligand Eye Scanning (FLES) technique that measures a fluorescent signature specific to an exogenous ligand bound to amyloid-β in the lens of the eye. Sensitivity and specificity of 85% and 95%, respectively, have been achieved in predicting clinical diagnosis. Additionally, amyloid brain...

Elevated Galectin-3 Levels in the Serum of Patients With Alzheimer's Disease
In this study, we found significantly increased Gal-3 serum levels in patients with AD compared to control participants (P = .017). There was no significant difference between patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and healthy controls (P = .143) or between patients with AD and MCI (P = .688). The degree of cognitive impairment, as measured by the Mini-Mental Status Examination score, was found to have a significant correlation with the Gal-3 serum levels in all patients and healthy controls. These data suggest that Gal-3 potentially plays a role in the neuropathogenesis of AD. The Gal-3 found in serum could be a po...
