An update on mucosal melanoma: future directions
By definition, mucosal melanomas are malignant primary tumors originating from melanocytes located in the mucosal membranes of the nasal cavity and accessory sinuses, oral cavity, lips and pharynx, and vulvar, vaginal or uterus, anorectal, or basically any other part of the mucosal surface lining. These malignant melanomas usually occur in occult sites, which in combination with the lack of early specific signs contributes to the delay in diagnosis and poor prognosis of the disease. Given the rarity of mucosal melanomas, knowledge about their pathogenesis and risk factors is insufficient and when compared with cutaneous an...

Detection of IgG autoantibodies against desmocollin –3 in Greek patients with pemphigus
In this study we examined sera from Greek patients with PV and PF for the presence of IgG autoantibodies against Dsc-3. Immunoblotting for the detection of autoantibodies against Dsc-3 was performed in sera from all cases. Dsc-3 autoantibodies were not detected in either group (PV and PF). Our results confirm the hypothesis that the pathogenic role of Dsc-3 in epidermal blistering in PV and PF remains controversial.  (Source: Acta Dermatovenerologica Croatica)

Comparing the efficacy of mesotherapy to topical minoxidil in the treatment of female pattern hair loss using ultrasound biomicroscopy: A randomized controlled trial
The efficacy of mesotherapy in the treatment of female pattern hair loss (FPHL) has not yet been evaluated. Aim of the study was to compare the initial efficacy and safety of mesotherapy containing nutritional supplements to topical minoxidil 5% solution in FPHL. 30 patients with FPHL were randomly classified into two equal groups: Group A applied minoxidil 5% lotion twice daily; Group B was injected with mesotherapy once weekly. For both groups ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) was performed before and at the end of the 12th week of treatment. After treatment, no significant difference was found between both groups with rega...

Disseminated strongyloidiasis
This article presents a case of a patient infected with HTLV-I and  Strongyloides stercoraliswho developed the disseminated form. There were purpuric reticulated periumbilical lesions as well as vibices on the patient ’s flanks. Histopathologic exam of a skin lesion revealed the presence of larvae in the deep reticular dermis. We emphasize the relevance of awareness regarding interaction between HTLV-1 and strongyloidiasis, besides identification of the cutaneous manifestations of the disease to reach an approp riate therapeutic diagnosis.  (Source: Acta Dermatovenerologica Croatica)

Necrolytic migratory erythema: complete healing after surgical removal of pancreatic carcinoma
Necrolytic migratory erythema is considered an obligatory cutaneous paraneoplastic sign associated with glucagonoma. Glucagonoma syndrome is defined by the presence of an alpha-cell secreting tumor of the pancreas, elevated levels of glucagon, and a characteristic rash called necrolytic migratory erythema. Although necrolytic migratory erythema is a specific finding in glucagonoma syndrome, it may occur in other settings, unassociated with an alpha-cell pancreatic tumor (pseudoglucagonoma syndrome). The rarity of glucagonoma imposes a challenge, with most patients being diagnosed after a long period of treatment for their ...

A case report of the use of rituximab and the Epidermolysis Bullosa Disease Activity Scoring Index (EBDASI) in a patient with epidermolysis bullosa acquisita with extensive esophageal involvement
A 49-year-old man with recalcitrant mechanobullous epidermolysis bullosa acquisita (EBA) with significant esophageal involvement was treated with rituximab. EBA is a chronic autoimmune subepidermal bullous disease. It is characterized by skin fragility and scarring caused by circulating and tissue bound antibodies to type VII collagen. EBA is often unresponsive or poorly responsive to conventional immunosuppressive therapies such as corticosteroids, methotrexate, and cyclosporine. The burden of long-term use of immunosuppressants also limits their use in the treatment of chronic autoimmune diseases such as EBA. Since a val...

Seroprevalence and risk factors for HIV, hepatitis B and syphilis in populations with high-risk behaviors in Croatia
HIV and sexually-transmitted diseases (STDs) represent a significant public health problem worldwide. We analyzed the seroprevalence and risk factors for HIV, hepatitis B and syphilis in populations with high-risk behaviors in Croatia. During a three-year period, a total of 443 men who have sex with men (MSM) / bisexual persons, sex workers (SW) / clients of SW, persons with multiple sexual partners, and persons with a history of STD were tested for the presence of HIV, hepatitis B virus (HBV), and  Treponema pallidum(syphilis) antibodies within the framework of second generation HIV surveillance. Participants were recrui...

Nail involvements as an indicator of skin severity in psoriatic patients
In this study, 71 psoriatic patients with a mean age of 39.23 ±17.9 years (mean ± Standard Deviation; range: 4 to 77 years old) were studied. 22 patients (31%) had nail involvements. PASI scores were 11.7±5.7 and 5.7±4.5 in the two groups with and without nail involvements, respectively (P<0.001). There were no significant differences between age, age of onset, and duration of the disease between the two groups (P>0.05).The correlation coefficient between PASI and NAPSI was 0.367, which was statistically significant (P<0.001).Based on the findings of our study, nail involvement is an important criterion in det...
