Application of indirect immunofluorescence on the diagnosis of pemphigus
Pemphigus is an autoimmune bullous disease, and although several diagnostic methods are now in use indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) is still considered an important tool for diagnosing pemphigus because of its convenience, repeatability, and reduced pain for patients. The goal of the present study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of IIF on normal human skin (NS), monkey esophagus (ME), and salt-split skin (SS) for better diagnosis of pemphigus. Clinical data of 70 patients with pemphigus and 56 control were collected. IIF on NS, ME, and SS were assessed separately by observing fluorescein deposition and comparing its ...

Identification and antifungal activity profile of Candida species isolated from patients with pemphigus vulgaris with oral lesions
Pemphigus vulgaris is an autoimmune disease that mostly affects the mucosa and oral cavity.Candida species can invade the mucosal lesions of these patients and cause diseases. The aim of this study was to identify the fungal agents isolated from mucosal lesions and evaluate antifungal activity profile against the isolates. A total of 25 patients with pemphigus vulgaris with active oral lesions and 25 healthy people serving as a control group were included in this study. Identification of the fungal isolates was performed based on conventional methods and DNA sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rDNA g...

Adalimumab – safe and effective therapy for adolescent patient with severe psoriasis and immune thrombocytopenia.
We report the case of an adolescent with severe psoriasis and concomitant immune thrombocytopenia who obtained remission during treatment with adalimumab. Increased concentration of tumor necrosis factor- α seems to be a pathogenic linkage and therapeutic target for both diseases.  (Source: Acta Dermatovenerologica Croatica)

Cutaneous pseudlolymphoma: A case report
Pseudolymphoma is a benign, reversible, inflammatory, reactive, and polyclonal lymphocyte proliferation, which regresses spontaneously or heals after elimination of the causal factor. A female patient, aged 33, presented with a painful, erythematosus, radiant tumor formation on the skin in the temporal region. The patient had enlarged lymph nodes on the right side of the neck before the appearance of that tumor formation. The dermatoscopic finding was nonspecific. After the tumor biopsy was performed, the diagnosis of reactive lymphatic proliferation – pseudolymphoma or cutaneous lymphoma of B-cell immunophenotype – wa...

The dermoscopic rainbow pattern - a review of the literature
The “rainbow” pattern is a relatively new dermoscopic term that describes a bluish-reddish coloration together with various colors of the rainbow observable mainly through polarized light dermoscopy. Despite several theories, the rainbow pattern has not yet been clearly associated with any particula r histological structure. This feature has been described in skin lesions with abundant vascularization such as Kaposi’s sarcoma, basal cell carcinoma, scars, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma, and others. In this paper we conducted a review of the available studies regarding the appearance of the rainbow pattern in diffe...

Bilateral periorbital ecchymosis following ablative laser removal of xanthelasma palpebrarum
We report the case of a 48-year-old woman who presented with bilateral periocular ecchymosis after laser removal of xanthelasma palpebrarum. Her medical history was unremarkable. Amyloidosis could be excluded by histopathology. We suggest that periocular ecchymosis is a rare adverse event after minor (laser) surgery of the eyelids and discuss the possible pathogenesis and differential diagnoses.   (Source: Acta Dermatovenerologica Croatica)

Efficacy of omalizumab in patients with chronic spontaneous urticaria and its association with serum IgE levels and eosinophil count
Chronic spontaneous urticaria can be treated with several drugs such as antihistamines, leukotriene antagonists, cyclosporine, doxepin, hydroxychloroquine, colchicine, and corticosteroids. However, treatment-resistant urticaria significantly reduces quality of life. In recent years, omalizumab has been considered to be an effective treatment option in treatment-resistant cases. We aimed to investigate the clinical efficacy of omalizumab in urticaria and its possible association with serum IgE levels, total eosinophil counts, and basophil percentages. Medical records of 11 patients with chronic spontaneous urticaria treated...

Knowledge, Attitudes and Behaviours Of Mostar University Students on the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation exposure - A KAB study
This study shows that Mostar University students have a high level of knowledge about UVR and skin cancer, but their behavior is not sufficiently preventive and appropriate to their knowledge. Medical students often use UV protection measures and employ more preventive behavior than that of other faculty students, but it is still at a low level of prevention. Findings concurred with existing evidence that the knowledge of associated risks from UVR was not sufficient to motivate safer sun-related practices.  (Source: Acta Dermatovenerologica Croatica)

Correlation between family history and the age of onset of childhood acne in relation to sex and type of acne
Acne vulgaris is a common chronic skin disorder of the pilosebaceous unit with a wide range of clinical presentations, which depend on the age of onset of acne, sex, family history of acne, and genetic factors, especially the genes affecting keratinization and desquamation. This retrospective study investigated pediatric acne using the patients ’ past medical history, with patients aged from newborns to 15 years of age. Acne were further stratified by 5 parameters: sex, age, family history, acne type, and localization. Our main aim was to investigate the possible association between selected parameters and the presence o...
