residency in UK
hi guys, i have been studying biology for 4 years without getting a degree because this year I got accepted both from an excellent dentistry Programme at Pavia University (italy, where Golgi Apparatus was discovered) and from a good medicine programme in Latvia. Medicine is my passion but i know that the Italian medical education is better than the latvian one. Unfortunately, there were no more seats for Medicine in Italy and it seems that, unless i accept the prestigious dentistry programme seat in italy, the only solution to study medicine is going to Latvia. with a Latvian degree, no Italian residency programme accep...

"How to master UKCAT, 600+ question book"- bryon, tyreman and clayden
Hello, I am in a small turmoil. I am using this book for my abstract reasoning section. In few questions what I found is the rule which book suggests at the back is in contrast to the patterns when we see. I really have no clue what is right and wrong. Has anyone encountered such problem before? If needed I can give exact problem number. If someone can reply here that will be great because may be there is something important which I am missing. Canadian Grade 11 Applying to UK Medicine
Hello, I'm a Grade 11 student in Ontario, Canada not currently enrolled in any enrichment program who is anxiously wondering about his overall chances of getting into medicine programs in the UK. As of now, my grades are as follows: Introduction to Social Sciences: 94% Biology: 82% Chemistry: 72% Spare I totally messed up in chemistry this semester, and am planning on retaking it in the summer. I only have around 40 hours of volunteering, none of which are related to medicine. I've resolved to pick up the slack and to put in as much effort as I possibly can, and have recently been scoring in the high 90s in chemistry....

Article in Sunday Times
Very interesting article in today's ST about two studies into the UKCAT. One concluded that it's worse than A Levels at predicting who does well in medical school. The other found that women perform worse in the test, but do better in medical school. I notice that Cambridge does not use aptitude tests and that Oxford is 'concerned' about them. I think it's ironic that a science thought by a lot of medical people to be "fluffy" and not particularly scientific (psychology) is used to determine who becomes a doctor. Warning to Mature Students taking A Levels for Med entry (non-grad)
Hey, After a chat with a university admissions advisor today, I just thought I would give a few of you a heads up in case it is useful. I was informed today that for the majority of mature students applying for medicine that are not taking the grad route you need 3 A Levels and an AS Level to even be considered and that any A Levels that you may have previously taken at school etc, they expire/are no longer valid after two years of taking them. I was also told I would definitely need at least a years worth of work experience in a medical setting (and cannot be admin etc). Then on top of that obviously a good UKCAT result....

Hi everyone, I have a quick question about the work experience references. Does anybody know if our referees are expected to produce a reference prior to the interview? The emails I've had seem to state this but don't provide any information about the format of the reference, and the 'relevant work experience' form on the website only provides space for name, address, etc.. Can anyone advise further? Thanks, Sam (Source: New Media Medicine)

Prospective GEM student, with many questions!
Hello. Good day to you all, and I hope you are settled in your seat because this will be a long post! Well, this is the third time I have seriously contemplated studying medicine, and this third time, I have decided, will be the ultimate pivotal moment where I either commit fully to the quest or put it to bed forever. No half measures. Naturally, I would rather do the 'commit fully' bit, but for that I need your help. I need to allay a number of fears that could persuade me that a medial career is not for the good of me and my family. My situation is this. I am 31 years old with an arts degree, and I have a wife and 2 c...

Work experience question!
Hi all, Quick question. I work as a national campaign manager for a disability charity. I work daily with people who have a disability, leading on health campaigns with them. We campaign for better training for GPs when dealing with people with this disability (controversial?!!), among other things, and I support and help train these people every day - three disabled people report to me directly. Do you think that this could count as relevant work experience for graduate entry purposes? I have six months experience in a hospital as well but when I apply, this time or next, it will be one/two years old. Many thanks!! (...

Mature Student - Wow what a challenge!
Well, I am applying for medicine in 2015. I am 30 years old and as a bit of background I have 5 A Levels from school back in 2001. Non of them are science based but I did get A's in them. I did not got to university but have had a successful 10 year career and more recently have been working for a medical devices company which has been the deciding factor in me pursuing this medicine degree. I am about to commence A Level studies. I was interested to hear from Plymouth University today that my previous A Levels count for nothing whatsoever. GEM Work experience questionnaire
Hi Everyone, I have recently receive an email from Nottingham stating that I've has reached the GAMSAT cut off score, and now the next stage of the process is to fill in a work experience record form. I phoned, and was told that this would be graded, and I'm worried that I won't receive an interview call, especially if it is graded compared to others (who have graduated and have alot more experience) I'm so confused because I obviously wrote a personal statement, so wouldn't they see my work experience from there...? Is it possible to do two AS-levels in six months with full-time work?
I work 40 hours and volunteer 8 hours per week. I'm self-teaching AS Chemistry on my one day off per week plus various hours after work. I'm starting to think I should be doing AS Biology as well as Chemistry if I want a wider choice of 5-year courses to apply to as a graduate. I am all too conscious of the fact that it is December already. That gives me only 6 months to learn four theory units and two practical units to the standard of an A grade, while working 48 hours per week. I am dedicated but I am wondering if this is asking too much? I only started the Chemistry a month ago so I will be doing two AS-levels in appr...

I'm now 22, I've spent the past few years living and travelling around the world, Asia, South America, Europe, and now living in Australia. I've finally gotten up the courage to admit what it is that I really want to do with my life, be a doctor. Really I just wanted to know what my best bet was, from my research I can see that my options would be to either retake my AS and A2 levels, or to do an Access to medicine course. Gamsat desperation
Hi everyone, I know no one probably wants to hear someone moan about the Gamsat, but I just found out that I failed a second time. I am just in a state of complete shock and need to vent. I started studying for the Gamsat in 2011. As an arts student I started very very early and focused entirely on the science, doing Des, princeton, griffiths, khan academy, ozimed etc. You name it I did it. And despite almost killing myself with studying and doing practise questions for almost two years, I took the aussie Gamsat in march and failed the science section. So I quit my job and worked even harder for the uk Gamsat studying...

Gamsat London study group
Hi everyone. I have just finished uni and have part time work in a hospital. However the majority of my time has been spent studing for the Gamsat in March. However after a month of study I have lost some motivation and would love to study with someone to help me keep on track (and vice versa). I have neither a core science or arts background. However I feel that I have picked up a lot in this last month. I would love to have someone who would be happy to meet up in London twice a week or more and go through stuff.
