I’ve heard many responses from folks who have read Grain Brain, but to know that I brought tears to someone’s eyes is incredibly humbling. – Dr. Perlmutter I live in Australia and, by chance, came across Grain Brain whilst browsing iBooks for a good summer read. Once I got over the shock of the scientific revelations of your findings, I did three things: I cried with relief: I finally had some answers as to why my health was deteriorating in recent years (I am a 50 year old who exercises and followed a low fat/carb diet). I collected all my statins and hypertensive medication and threw them in the bi...

Carb Cravings Control
One of the things that I remain most impressed by is the way this community has banded together, both here and on my Facebook page. I’m amazed at how supportive everyone is, and the valuable discussion that takes place. That’s why I wanted to use this blog post to pose a question to all of you: how do you handle your carb cravings? Last week, I mentioned that gluten and sugar can act much like a drug, leaving those going off gluten, grains and sugar going through a period of “withdrawal.” I’ve seen a number of comments come in from folks looking for advice on how to deal with this period and prevent a slip-up. B...

Coffee Can Save Your Brain
Being a coffee drinker, and at risk for Alzheimer’s disease, as are we all, I was heartened by this study appearing in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease. The researchers followed 1,409 individuals, aged 65-79, for an average of 21 years. The study also looked at each individual’s dietary habits. At the end of the study, 48 of the subjects had developed Alzheimer’s disease. And it was shown that the risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease was reduced by an astounding 65% in those who drank 3-5 cups of coffee daily. The authors went so far as to suggest that “this finding might open possibilities for prevention ...

Are Drugs Really The Way To Go For ADHD?
Over the past few months, I’ve produced several articles for the blog MindBodyGreen, a fantastic resource for anyone interested in learning more about topics and information pertaining to wellness.  You can find a completing listing of the articles I’ve written here on my website, but one in particular, published just last week, stirred up quite a conversation on social media. ADD/ADHD is an increasingly prevalent condition, one which the CDC recently said had been diagnosed in 11% of school-age children. As I note in my article, for the sake of comparison, we’re talking about a population the size of Kentucky. As a...

Grain Brain and the Seven Super Supplements
A brain-healthy, Alzheimer’s-fighting diet has properties that extend far beyond just decreasing your daily carb load. To truly provide your body  with  brain-boosting nutrients and vitamins that help stave off brain disease and other illnesses, you should consider a regular regimen of supplements. These seven supplements will go a long way towards helping you with prevention: DHA: An omega-3 fatty acid that represents more than 50% of the omega-3 fatty acids in the brain. Numerous studies link high levels of DHA with a decreased risk for dementia, Alzheimer’s and other brain diseases (view some of these studies her...

Peta W.
Peta contacted me from half a world away to share her mother’s story. Her excitement in telling me not only of her mother’s returned health, but her happiness, is heartwarming. – Dr. Perlmutter My mother has last stage Alzhiemer’s, and I remain her primary caregiver. I am an avid fan of Dr. Oz and caught you on the program in October 2013. After seeing the episode, my father ran out and got your book. On Monday October 21, it looked like my mother only had a few weeks left. Today, she is putting sentences together correctly, she looks great (her chinks are a rosy pink and not white), and she can not...

Embrace the Changing Message
Over the past 15 years I have written several books including LifeGuide, BrainRecovery, The Better Brain Book, Raise a Smarter Child By Kindergarten, Power Up Your Brain, and now Grain Brain – The Surprising Truth About Wheat Carbs and Sugar, Your Brain’s Silent Killers. Without question, the key dietary messaging over the years that I have put forth has clearly changed, and with good reason. Science is dynamic. And my mission is to remain at the leading edge of science and bring the very best and most current knowledge to public awareness. Looking back over the years there was a time when, for example, it was thought ...

Fasting for Brain Health
If you’re new to Grain Brain and eating for brain health, then you may not know about the first step that’s included in the Grain Brain diet, which is a 24-48 hour, water-only fast. There’s a lot of science out there (and some of it is available here on the site) that demonstrates the health, and specifically brain, benefits of fasting, including enhancing genetic pathways activated by caloric restriction. Watch this video to learn more. As always, keep in mind that fasting should only be undertaken in consultation with your personal physician. The post Fasting for Brain Health appeared first on David Perlmutter M.D....

Your Brain Needs Cholesterol
Cholesterol is vitally important for brain function. While your brain represents about 2-3% of your total body weight, 25% of the cholesterol in your body is found in your brain, where it plays important roles in such things as membrane function, acts as an antioxidant, and serves as the raw material from which we are able to make things like progesterone, estrogen, cortisol, testosterone and even vitamin D. In fact, in a recent study available on the NIH Public Access site, researchers showed that in the elderly, the best memory function was observed in those with the highest levels of cholesterol. Low cholesterol is ...

Kudos to the FDA on Their Trans Fat Decision
As I’m sure many of you have heard, the FDA has decided to ban trans fats in our foods. While many have scarcely commented on this laudable action, I think we should take a step back and look at the implications of this. Trans fats are a type of unsaturated fat that has undergone a process called hydrogenation in a process that dates back to the early 20th century. One of the earliest trans fats to enter the American marketplace was Crisco, partially hydrogenated cottonseed oil which appeared in 1911. The process allowed the creation of fats that resisted rancidity and had incredibly long shelf lives. The concern regard...

Regina
It all comes back to inflammation. – Dr. Perlmutter I have never had a problem with wheat (or any food for that matter) but ever since my late 20s I have suffered from arthritis. Doctors put me on Naproxen and I’ve taken that or Nabumatone for 30 years. At this stage in my life, I’ve decided I want to lose some weight. Now that I’m menopausal, I was put on a strict program by a nutritionist. This program had no grains (or non-fruit sugars) at all for the first 2 months. After about 2 weeks I was forgetting to take the anti-inflammatory meds since I didn’t feel the pain that usually indicated I...

Sarah L.
Sarah’s story is a reminder that gluten sensitivity comes in many different forms. – Dr. Perlmutter 11 years ago, in my third trimester of pregnancy, I developed itchy skin that made my life all but unbearable. I did neither marks nor welts on my skin. I considered myself “lucky” when hives would show so people didn’t think I was totally crazy. I saw my GP, dermatologists, and of course a psychiatrist. I was prescribed Effexor, Adavan, Xanax. Nothing helped the itch, and I knew these drugs were not what I needed. I wasn’t crazy or depressed. I was crazy and depressed because my skin felt...

Sharing Grain Brain
Between Facebook, Twitter, this blog and email, I hear from many of you who tell me you’re sharing Grain Brain, and its message, with family, friends, and just about anyone who will listen. Knowing that all of you feel as passionately about this cause as I do is simply amazing to learn, and I hope we can have a network effect that reaches far and wide. However, just as many of you tell me about the pushback you experience from “fatphobics and carboholics” who simply tune you out once you start discussing our nutritional plan for optimal brain health and fighting brain illnesses. I’m interested to hear what some of ...
